Kenyan arrested in Qatar first targeted by phishing attack

Kenyan arrested in Qatar first targeted by phishing attack DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — A Kenyan security guard now facing charges in Qatar after writing compelling accounts of being a low-paid worker there found himself targeted by a phishing attack just before his arrest, analysts say. While analysts from Amnesty International and Citizen Lab said they were unable to say who targeted Malcolm Bidali, the phishing attack mirrored others previously carried out by Gulf Arab sheikhdoms targeting dissidents and political opposition.

Qualifying to the World Cup from South America is one of the most grueling paths to the biggest stage in global soccer. Each of the 10 nations plays a total of 18 matches over the course of the qualification process.

Despite the March 2021 match postponements due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the South American soccer confederation (aka CONMEBOL) is planning to reschedule any outstanding matches at some point in 2022. The soccer calendar should allow for it because the Qatar World Cup is scheduled to be played from Nov. 21 through Dec. 18, 2022.

How CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying works

It's not complicated in South America. All 10 nations play in a round-robin format with each country playing the other nine times at home and away (total of 18 matches). It's three points for a win, one for a draw and zero for every loss.

After 18 matches, the top four teams in the standings qualifying directly to Qatar 2022, while the fifth-place team will advance to an intercontinental playoff with a ticket to Qatar on the line.
