Questions raised over decision

Mount and Chilwell spoke with club team-mate Gilmour on the pitch after England's draw with Scotland, and Chelsea technical and performances advisor Petr Cech hit out at the logic behind the two players being forced to isolate when Scotland's players did not do so.

On Instagram, Cech asked: "Please could someone help me understand how it is possible Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell - both with negative tests - have to isolate after they got in contact with Billy Gilmour while the entire Scottish team, who shared the dressing room, hotel, coach and plane while travelling, [dining] room and meeting room, is allowed to play the game without any problem because they returned with the required negative tests?

Mount and Chilwell will be able to train individually away from the rest of the England team at their St. George’s Park base, where the rest of the squad is due to return after playing the Czech Republic. All England players came back with negative PCR tests on Sunday and lateral flow tests on Monday. Mount has established himself an integral part of Southgate 's plans, starting in 10 of the last 12 England games. The only matches the 22-year-old midfielder missed were the Euro 2020 warm-up matches as he rested following Chelsea's Champions League title win.

Southgate almost certainly would have started Mount after the Chelsea man featured in the earlier tournament games against Croatia and Scotland. He has become one of the first names on the England teamsheet as is as trusted by Southgate as he is by club manager Thomas Tuchel. Neither of England's two performances so far at Euro 2020 could be described as vintage but what is for sure is that Mount has brought plenty of energy and creativity to the side. He has covered 19.7km in the two games, behind only fellow midfielders Kalvin Phillips and Declan Rice, and often looks the most likely
