The Tokyo Olympics officially begin Friday with the opening ceremony, the details of which still largely remain a mystery.Early birds can watch the event live at 6:55 a.m. ET on NBC, but anyone who doesn't want to wake up with the sun can watch a tape-delayed version at 7:30 p.m. ET.

A year later than expected, but fans are ready none the less: Olympic swimming is back.

It was a thrilling 2016 Rio Games, from Simone Manuel and Penny Oleksiak tying in the 100 meter freestyle and Katie Ledecky setting two new world records, to the outstanding Olympic debut of Ryan Murphy and the final Olympics for Michael Phelps.

This year is expected to deliver some more exciting action. Canada's Kylie Masse and Oleksiak are strong contenders for Olympic gold, while the U.S. looks to have a stout roster once again with Ledecky, Murphy and Caeleb Dressel all expected to have big performances in the pool of the Tokyo Aquatics Centre.

With the exception of July 31, each day will begin with heats starting at 6 a.m. ET and will end with finals races starting up at 9:30 p.m. ET each day. The USA Network will carry the heats in the United States and NBC will have the finals, while CBC will provide coverage of both events in Canada.

Those in the United States hoping to see replays of the qualifying heats can tune into NBC every afternoon to see how swimmers performed earlier in the morning.

  Olympics Latest: Chinese divers 1-2 in springboard prelims TOKYO (AP) — The Latest on the Tokyo Olympics, which are taking place under heavy restrictions after a year’s delay because of the coronavirus pandemic: ___ China’s Shi Tingmao and Wang Han have finished 1-2 in the preliminaries of Olympic women’s 3-meter springboard diving. Shi totalled 350.45 points for her five dives, followed closely by Wang at 347.25. The two already teamed up to win the 3-meter synchro event. Shi is going for her second straight individual gold on the springboard and looking to extend China’s dominance in the women’s event.

Swimming fans are going to have days filled with their favorite sport.

From July 24-30, every day will have heats early in the morning, and semifinals and finals in the evening. On July 31, there will only be five finals races held in the evening to wrap up swimming at the Olympics. Each day, the morning events will begin at 6 a.m. ET, while the evening events begin at 9:30 p.m. ET.

Tokyo Olympics Viewership & Ratings Hit New Lows As Games’ Final Days Loom .
Viewership for NBC’s coverage of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics continued to fall as Thursday evening delivered both the lowest-rated and least-watched day. Per overnight numbers, NBC’s Thursday night coverage aired to 10.4 million viewers and earned a 2.1 rating in the 18-49 demo. Thursday’s numbers fell below last Friday and last Saturday, which first marked the showings with the  smallest audience and lowest ratings, respectively. Thursday saw a 35% drop in viewership and fell 1.5 in ratings from the previous week, which was the second best-performing night.
