First place in Group E will be on the line when Great Britain (1st place, six points) and Canada’s women’s national soccer team (2nd place, four points) go head-to-head in the group finale. A win for Canada will guarantee first place.
Here’s why first place matters: The top team would likely face No. 15 China or No. 9 Australia in the quarterfinals. Second place in Group E, currently occupied by Canada, would probably take on the No. 7 team in the world, Brazil. The Canadians have faced Brazil twice this year and have proven unable to score against them in a 2-0 loss (February 24) and a 0-0 draw (June 14).
“We absolutely want to win this match [vs. Great Britain], get the points, and move on to the next round,” Canada head coach Bev Priestman said in a team release. “Keeping the knockout stage in mind, we have to make sure our players are as rested and as fresh as possible, but we have an incredible depth within our group of players, and I believe this can give us a result against Great Britain.”

Head coach Bev Priestman has plenty of decisions to make. First, it’s unclear whether starting goalkeeper Stephanie Labbe will be ready to go after missing out against Chile in the wake of a rib injury suffered against Chile. Kailen Sheridan ably filled in for the 2-1 win over Chile.
Defender Allysha Chapman was also kept off the matchday roster against Chile after starting the match against Japan. No updates have been provided on her status. If it was purely for rest purposes, she could return at left back.
Olympics schedule 2021: Day-by-day TV coverage to watch Tokyo Games on NBC channels, stream online
Here's what's happening at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics today as well as a TV schedule to watch every event in the United States and Canada.During the 2016 Rio Olympics, the United States broadcast 6,755 hours of Olympic action. Canada itself produced over 2,000 hours. Each country could set new Summer Games-highs in 2021.
After getting a breather and coming off the bench against Chile, Quinn could potentially reenter the starting lineup in central midfield. If healthy, Sophie Schmidt could spot Desiree Scott, who has gone the full 90 in both matches for Canada so far.
In attack, it will be interesting to see if Nichelle Prince or Janine Beckie get a breather — Jordy Huitema and Deanne Rose are the obvious replacements. However, given the form both are experiencing, Priestman might want to allow them to continue to build a rhythm at forward in front of captain Christine Sinclair.
Vanessa Gilles (center back) and Evelyne Viens (forward) started against England in April and might also be asked to spot Kadeisha Buchanan and Christine Sinclair, respectively. As mentioned, Priestman (below) has options.
For Great Britain, head coach Hege Riise made five changes to her starting lineup from the first game to the second. A few of those starters from the opener who got a breather in the second match — Rachel Daly, Millie Bright, Caroline Weir and Georgia Stanway — could also make their way back into the XI. British media is reporting that Fran Kirby is available again after sitting out the action thus far due to injury.

Canada vs. Great Britain: Odds & prediction
It’s impossible to know how strong each of the lineups will be and how much each team will prioritize rest ahead of the single-elimination knockouts. But what we do know is that both teams are strong defensively: Great Britain has not conceded a goal (and only allowed a grand total of two shots on goal), and Canada has only given up just five goals in nine matches played in 2021.
Olympics track and field results: Updated 2021 medal winners for every event at Tokyo Games
Sporting News has you covered for every track and field event, including medal count and full list of athletes who podium. And no other sport offers more opportunities for individual medalists than track and field. It features 48 medal events — 11 more than second-place swimming — and 189 medals over the final 10 days of competition in Tokyo.
The two teams are also very familiar with one another based on recent matchups — Canada beat England 2-0 in one of those nine matches played this year — and the makeup of their coaching staffs. Canada’s head coach, Priestman, used to be an assistant coach for England. Meanwhile, Great Britain has a Canadian assistant on its staff: Canadian 2012 bronze medal winner Rhian Wilkinson.
Although Canada says it wants to win the game, it’s also true that the draw is the convenient result for both teams: It gives the British the top spot and it secures qualification as the second-place team for Canada. If Canada was to lose the match, its fate would be determined by goal differential and there’s a scenario the Canadians could be eliminated if they suffer a heavy defeat to the British.
For all the reasons above, a low-scoring, cautiously played game could prove the best odds play, with a first-half draw coming in at -105.
Prediction: Canada 0, Great Britain 0

- Great Britain to win: +105
