NHL commissioner Bettman has asked to move hockey to Summer Olympics

NHL commissioner Bettman has asked to move hockey to Summer Olympics During TNT's broadcast of the 2022 Winter Classic between the St. Louis Blues and Minnesota Wild, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman stated that he's explored the idea of having hockey added to the Summer Olympics. According to Bettman, he's been trying to make this happen since the mid-1990s, but the International Olympic Committee has been adamant about not moving it. Hockey made its Olympic debut at the 1920 Summer Games before switching to the Winter Olympics in 1924.A move to the Summer Olympics would obviously make more logistical sense for the NHL, as the Games wouldn't interfere with the league's 82-game regular season or playoffs.

The Evander Kane saga marches on.

After having his contract terminated by the San Jose Sharks over the weekend after clearing unconditional waivers, the NHLPA has responded by filing a grievance, stating that the Sharks "did not have sufficient grounds" to rip up his contract.

Kane's agent hinted at the action over the weekend:

The Sharks reportedly allege that Kane breached his contract by travelling from California to Vancouver over the holiday break while in COVID-19 protocol. It was determined that Kane's apparent disregard for protocol was reason to nix the remaining three-plus seasons and $22-plus-million remaining on his current standard player's contract.

Father of Canadiens' Joel Edmundson dies after battling lung cancer

Father of Canadiens' Joel Edmundson dies after battling lung cancer The Canadiens announced Saturday afternoon that Joel Edmundson’s father, Bob, has died after battling lung cancer. Bob Edmundson was 61. He died at home Friday in Brandon, Man. Edmundson has yet to play a game with the Canadiens this season because of a back injury and is currently among 24 players on the team who are on the NHL’s COVID-19 protocol list. Edmundson left the Canadiens for a period of time in October to be with his father. The Bob Edmundson was 61. He died at home Friday in Brandon, Man.

Kane had previously been suspended 21 games and subsequently demoted to the American Hockey League for submitting a fake vaccination card at the outset of the season. It's believed that the Sharks were trying to find a trade partner to offload Kane since his demotion.

Kane has had a litany of issues since entering the league, several of which precede the signing of his seven-year, $49 million contract in San Jose. Most recently, the league cleared Kane of any wrongdoing after Kane's ex-wife, Anna, accused him of domestic assault and betting on NHL games.

It was reported before the year that Kane's teammates did not want him to return this season.

Without a deal, it's believed that Kane can pursue other NHL opportunities, though the appeal process will likely hold up a potential return.
