What the Puck: Full marks for Canadiens' moves, but hard work remains

What the Puck: Full marks for Canadiens' moves, but hard work remains Listening to Habs fans Tuesday, you’d swear that the Canadiens had just won the Stanley Cup. Don’t get me wrong. I’m with the punters who say rookie general manager Kent Hughes won his first trade deadline day. He dealt Brett Kulak to the Edmonton Oilers for a conditional second-round draft choice this year, a seventh-rounder in 2024 and a live body, defenceman William Lagesson, who can immediately be slotted into the blue-line corps. That’s a great deal considering Kulak could be an unrestricted free agent this summer. The Artturi Lehkonen deal is also a good one.

Montreal Canadiens veteran Brendan Gallagher has accused Ottawa Senators forward Tim Stützle of embellishing injuries, calling the alleged behaviour "embarrassing."

Gallagher spoke out about Stützle laying on the ice, seemingly injured, after Ottawa beat the Habs 6-3 in Montreal on Tuesday night.

"When I was 10 years old, our coach had a rule: if you lay on the ice and the trainers, or if the coach had to come on the ice to get you, you're too hurt to play minimum three shifts," said Gallagher.

"More than half the games we've played against him, he's laid on the ice and is right back out there the next shift."

Ottawa Senators announce that owner Melnyk has died at the age of 62

Ottawa Senators announce that owner Melnyk has died at the age of 62 Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk has died at the age of 62. The Senators made the announcement Monday night. The cause of death was not immediately known. In 2015, Melnyk had a liver transplant at the Toronto General Hospital. He was reportedly mere days away from death before a suitable donor was found. "It is with great sadness that the family of Eugene Melnyk and the Ottawa Senators hockey organization announce his passing on March 28, 2022 after an illness he faced with determination and courage," the team said in a statement. "Eugene never wavered in his desire and commitment to bring the Stanley Cup to the nation's capital.

The 20-year-old Stützle is in his second NHL season. He has 15 goals and 28 assists over 68 games for the Senators this campaign with a minus-27 rating.

Gallagher, who has played all 10 seasons with Montreal, noted that he's played against Stützle over a dozen times since the Senators forward came to the NHL.

"More than half the games we've played against him, he's laid on the ice and is right back out there next shift. He lays on the ice, he acts like he's hurt, he sells the call, he's on the ice that same power play," said Gallagher. "There's kids watching, we're role models, and if I was a teammate of his I'd tell him to smarten up.

"It's just not a good look. Very talented player, very good players, he needs to stop laying on the ice. It's embarrassing."

The Canadiens visit Ottawa on April 23.

Jets keep slim playoff hopes alive with 4-3 win over Senators .
OTTAWA — The Winnipeg Jets needed a reminder that the season isn’t quite over and they responded with a 4-3 win over the Ottawa Senators Sunday night. The Jets looked like a disinterested team after the opening 20 minutes, but a harsh talking to seemed to do the trick to get everyone back on track. “We got yelled at after the first,” said Paul Statsny, who scored the Jets' third goal. It woke everyone up. We’ve been needing that for a while, so it was just good to have.” Nikolaj Ehlers had a goal and two assists, while Pierre-Luc Dubois scored his 100th NHL career goal and Kyle Connor’s third-period goal proved to be the winner.
