Naylor, Guardians win 5th in row, beat White Sox in Game 1 CHICAGO (AP) — Josh Naylor snapped a ninth-inning tie with a pinch-hit single, and the streaking Cleveland Guardians beat the Chicago White Sox 7-4 on Saturday in the opener of a split doubleheader. Steven Kwan had three hits and José Ramírez drove in two runs with a pair of sacrifice flies as Cleveland matched a season high with its fifth straight win. Amed Rosario had two hits and two RBIs. The Guardians improved to 8-9 in games during their major league-high nine doubleheaders. They began the day just 1 1/2 games back of Minnesota for the AL Central lead.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Guardians breakout sluger Josh Naylor was held out of Cleveland's game Saturday after experiencing numbness in the same right ankle he severly injured in June of 2021.

Naylor was scratched from the lineup before a 6-4 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays, and manager Terry Francona said he will be evaluated when the team returns home after Sunday's series finale.

“He was on his way to go get loose and said it went numb on him and it was hard for him to walk,” Francona said. “It’s hard to imagine that something significant happened when he was on his way to get loose, so that's hopeful."

Giménez homers, Guardians roll past White Sox in 8-2 romp

Giménez homers, Guardians roll past White Sox in 8-2 romp CHICAGO (AP) — The Cleveland Guardians were already rolling by the time Andrés Giménez stepped to the plate in the first inning. The All-Star then gave them a big push. Giménez homered, Josh Naylor drove in three runs and Cleveland beat the Chicago White Sox 8-2 on Friday night. The Guardians cruised to their fourth straight win, pounding White Sox starter Lucas Giolito in the opener of a four-game series between two of the top three teams in the tight AL Central. Giménez made it 4-0 in the first when he lined a two-run homer to right, a big hit in an eventful week for the 21-year-old Venezuelan. The Guardians scored two more in the second to go up 6-0.

In a game on June 27, 2021, in Minnesota, Naylor was in right field and chasing a shallow flyball when he collided with second baseman Ernie Clement on Jorge Polanco's single.

Naylor was taken to a hospital and was diagnosed with a closed fracture and dislocation of the right ankle. He underwent surgery later that week to repair those injuries, in addition to torn ligaments in the ankle, and missed the rest of the season.

Naylor is hitting .282 with 14 homers, 53 RBIs and an .846 OPS in 70 games this season.

Toronto slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. also managed to extend his hit streak to a career-high 22 games with a first-inning double as the Blue Jays (61-51) halted its three-game slide to win for only the seven time in seven outings. The Guardians (60-53) saw their six-game win streak end before 44,977 at Rogers Centre.
