It was basically a four-day love-in for Canada’s senior men’s basketball team in Halifax. They were feted everywhere they went and adored by a sellout crowd just happy to see a real, live game on home soil.

Monday? Not so much.

As the Canadian team continued the long process of trying to qualify for the 2019 FIBA World Cup in China, it entered the maw of a beast in Santiago, Dominican Republic, for the second game in the six-game first-round series.

It’s more likely the Canadians will have beer or coins tossed their way than the hosannas they got in Halifax, and handling that atmosphere will be as important as making shots.

“We know Dominican is probably going to be sold out . . . and it’s just going to be us 12 and our coaching staff versus them,” Canadian guard Xavier Rathan-Mayes said. “We’re excited for it. It’s a good opportunity for us, for our country, to be able to go out and represent and show what we do at the highest level.”

The Dominican Republic beat U.S. Virgin Islands 99-89 on Friday night to open the first qualification round, led by 19 points and 11 rebounds from Eloy Vargas, a 28-year-old former University of Kentucky Wildcat who now plays in the top French league. The Dominican roster, like so many teams in the early stages of qualification, is in flux but it’s filled with professionals from various European leagues and will be buoyed by a boisterous home crowd, just as Canada was for its win over Bahamas.

One thing Canada will have for Monday’s game is a scouting report to go off. Former national team assistant and current Niagara River Lions coach Joe Raso was at Friday’s game to at least get a feel for what Dominican Republic has. But games like these are as much about will as skill, and if the Canadians can weather the atmosphere they can win.

Last summer’s AmeriCup tournament was a perfect prelude for some of them. Half of this Canadian roster — Rathan-Mayes, Heslip, Dyshawn Pierre, Joel Anthony, Olivier Hanlan and Grandy Glaze — were part of the group that faced Argentina in the hometown of Argentine legend Manu Ginobili.

“Our team has a lot of experience playing pro level,” guard Brady Heslip said. “A good amount of them have played before, including a good amount . . . in Argentina and that was very hostile. If anything, that was great experience for now when these games really matter for us.”

After Monday’s game, the World Cup qualification process goes on hold for months. Canada’s next games will be in late February in Bahamas and U.S. Virgin Islands. They conclude the first round with home games against Virgin Islands and Dominican Republic bracketing the Canada Day holiday.
