Texas El-Paso lost more than just a basketball game Monday night.

Miners coach Tim Floyd abruptly announced his retirement following UTEP's 66-52 defeat against visiting Lamar.

The loss was UTEP's fifth in a row, leaving the Miners 1-5 on the season, but Floyd, 63, said his decision wasn't results-based.

"I'm through. I've coached my last game," he said, according to the El Paso Times. "This is the right time ... this is the right time."

Floyd was early in his eighth season as the UTEP coach. He compiled a 138-98 record at the school.

"I've coached for 42 years and I love this school," Floyd said, according to the Times. "My father played here. Nobody wants to win here more than I do. I've coached at this university for 16 years and I think it's time for somebody else to have the opportunity to have the joy that I've had, the agony that I've had, the acclaim that I've had and the heartbreak that I've had in my career."

Floyd's retirement follows the appointment last week of Jim Senter as athletic director.

"I'll always pull for this school," Floyd said, according to the Times. "I love (the current UTEP) players and those players know that I love them. But I have a family and I have issues of my own. I'm going to be fine. But they feel like it's time."

UTEP did not immediately announce a replacement for Floyd.

UTEP Coach Tim Floyd Retires Abruptly After Loss to Lamar. Floyd came to UTEP —where he spent nearly a decade as an assistant in the 1970’s and 80’s—in 2010, one year after he resigned from USC amid an NCAA investigation.

"I'm still shocked," fifth-year senior Jake Flaggert told the Times. "I know Coach Floyd would never give up on us unless it was something serious. He mentioned a health issue but he didn't go into detail."

Before landing at UTEP, Floyd was the head coach at Idaho, New Orleans, Iowa State and Southern California in the collegiate ranks and the Chicago Bulls and the then-New Orleans Hornets in the NBA.

He exited USC under the cloud of an NCAA investigation regarding former player O.J. Mayo, though Floyd denied breaking any rules.

Overall, Floyd posted a 445-267 mark in college, not including wins vacated by USC. He led his teams to the NCAA Tournament eight times, twice reaching the Sweet 16 (with Iowa State in 1996-97 and USC in 2006-07).

Floyd's NBA coaching record was 90-231, and he took New Orleans to the playoffs in 2003-04.
