Forward Lars Eller won’t be testing the free agent market this summer, as the Washington Capitals signed him to a five-year, $17.5-million extension on Saturday.

Eller’s new deal, which will carry him through the 2022-23 season, carries a $3.5-million cap hit — the same cap hit he currently has on his soon-to-expire contract.

This is Eller’s second season in Washington since being acquired from the Montreal Canadiens via a draft-day trade in 2016. The 28-year-old centreman is currently enjoying his best season yet — his 11 goals and 17 assists have him sitting just two points shy of his career best total.

Eller has registered a total 96 goals and 113 assists for 209 career NHL points in 576 games over the course of nine NHL seasons — six with the Canadiens — since being drafted 13th overall by the St. Louis Blues in 2007.
