NBA Free Agency Rumors: LeBron James, Paul George will talk about teaming up on Lakers, per Woj

NBA Free Agency Rumors: LeBron James, Paul George will talk about teaming up on Lakers, per Woj This is what the Lakers cleared all this cap space for — just in case LeBron James wants to team up with another superstar, like Paul George. When Magic Johnson and Rob Pelinka made the D’Angelo Russell trade it was with one goal in mind: To make themselves available in case LeBron James and/or another superstar wanted to team up with their Los Angeles Lakers. Well, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, this could very well play out in the coming months. Here’s how he puts it: “The most intriguing scenario remains him partnering with LeBron James on Los Angeles because Paul George alone doesn’t make them a championship contender, but partnering with LeBron there’s a fairly easy pathway for the Lakers to get that salary cap space. That’s going to be a conversation or conversations those guys are going to have once we get toward July.” Frankly, George and LeBron have probably had a conversation like this already. I have beachfront property in Arizona to sell anyone who honestly believes players wait until the end of their final season under contract to start figuring out who they want to play with and how best to make that happen. This is no different. George’s season in Oklahoma City did not live up to his or fans’ expectations. A team with an MVP, another star and a fading one like Carmelo Anthony had higher aspirations than a first-round exit at the hand of the Utah Jazz.

There’s a fine line between genius and insanity, and that appears to be what Earl Boykins is toeing with his theory on LeBron James’ free agency.

Appearing Wednesday on Altitude Sports’ “The Hastings & Browman Show,” the retired guard spoke on James’ potential destinations and gave a surprising contender for who he believes could be an option … the Denver Nuggets.

“He’s gonna look at Denver,” said Boykins. “He’s gonna talk to [Nuggets president of basketball operations] Tim [Connelly], and he’s gonna say ‘If I sign here, what moves are you gonna make? What’s gonna be left if I decide to sign here?’ The Nuggets have the young pieces that LeBron wants around him.

Boykins was then asked what percentage he would put Denver’s chances of landing The King at, to which he replied, “If they sign [Nikola] Jokic [to an extension], it goes up to 35, 40 percent.”

Earlier in the segment, Boykins also stated for some reason James would “never, ever” play for the New York Knicks.

In any case, Boykins, now 42, himself played in the league from 1998 to 2012, including as a Cleveland Cavalier for two of those seasons. He is also a native of Cleveland and was one of the area’s biggest high school basketball phenoms in the early part of the ’90s. However, Boykins may have some bias in hyping up the Nuggets here since he also played for them for four seasons (his longest of any team) and now coaches high school basketball in the Denver area.

As for the Nuggets, they have an interesting collection of under-25 players with upside (such as Jokic, Gary Harris, and Jamal Murray) and playoff-tested veterans (like Paul Millsap, Wilson Chandler, and James’ ex-Cavs teammate Richard Jefferson). The team came within just one game of a postseason berth this year and are reinventing themselves in more ways than one. However, as a Western Conference club that is probably another few years away from realistically competing, it’s hard to see James making good on Boykins’ theory here.

H/T Deadspin

Report: Cavaliers flying blind into draft because LeBron doesn’t know what he’s going to do .
In reality, the Cavaliers have to act as if LeBron is gone. That was the sense one got being around the team through the playoffs and Finals, that this relationship had run its course. The Cavaliers should draft the best player they can with that pick, unless some team comes through with a killer offer for the slot (and Love plus the No. 8 is not going to land Kawhi Leonard, who the Spurs are not moving that fast to trade anyway). Then, if and when LeBron leaves, start looking at possible trades for Love, Kyle Korver, and every other veteran on the roster. Start the rebuild.
