An interface for smartphones for exchanging corona warning app data in a first group of states has been active since the beginning of this week, according to the European Commission in Brussels on Tuesday. The gateway is to be connected to the databases of the respective national Corona warning apps on October 17th.

The new system was initially tested with six countries - the aim is to have eleven EU members in a "first wave" by mid or late October. First, Germany, Italy and Ireland are to be linked. Then it is the turn of Austria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, the Netherlands, Poland and Spain. The order depends on the technical developments of the different warning apps and regulatory issues in the respective countries.

You can then decide whether you only want to receive the national data, the data from selected individual states or the EU-wide data set. France, where infections with the corona virus had recently increased particularly sharply, is not among them for the time being because those responsible have decided on a different technical concept. The French did not want their national corona warning app to be based on the technical interfaces of the US companies Google and Apple. As a result, the French app runs poorly on the iPhones and has only had around three million downloads so far.

Representatives of the EU Commission emphasized, but it is hoped that all EU countries can join in "as soon as possible". Without France, there are already national corona warning apps in 15 EU countries that are in principle compatible. Three more are in the works.

In the past few weeks there has been intensive cooperation between the Commission and the Member States - both on epidemiological issues and on the security of private data when it is used. Consumers are now to be convinced of the advantages of a Europe-wide corona warning system via smartphone with an information campaign.

Modeled on the German app, which has meanwhile been downloaded around 18 million times, the software exchanges encrypted data via Bluetooth radio between cell phones whose owners are getting close. The Commission emphasized that only randomly generated keys and anonymized data traffic are used. If a virus infection becomes known, contacts of the person concerned receive a warning via mobile phone. The exchange of information now also works when staying in different EU countries. This will make traveling within the European Union safer. The warning app is only one of several means to contain the pandemic. dpa
