Anyone who, as a proud Apple Watch owner, wanted to listen to music via Spotify in the past always had to have their iPhone with them. Because until now, the Apple Watch has not been able to stream music separately from the mobile device - listening to music via Spotify was only possible in conjunction with the iPhone.

Apple Watch allows you to add up to 2GB of local music directly. So you can add downloaded Spotify to your Apple Watch to listen them offline without a iPhone nearby. However, Spotify music are protected by DRM, only Premium users can download and save Spotify songs offline.

I am looking at buying the Apple Watch 5 series. I want to use it when I go for runs and not have to take my phone with me. This includes tracking my runs and listening to music. I have Spotify Premium - is there a way to listen to songs on the Apple Watch 5 GPS only whilst on my run.

streaming update is already being tested on some user accounts

But Apple Watch users can finally look forward to a long-awaited update. As the US online news portal "TechCrunch" reports, it will be possible in the future to stream music independently using the Apple Watch. According to the tech portal, this function was discovered by some users in the Apple Watch app in September. This means that the long-awaited, autonomous streaming application will be implemented almost exactly two years after the introduction of Spotify in the Apple Watch app.

Independent streaming via the Apple Watch is possible via LTE or WLAN - or via a network with which the iPhone is not even connected. But not every user can already access the new function in the Apple Watch app; For some users, the autonomous streaming option is still hidden or still provided with a beta label. Experts estimate that Spotify wants to start an initial test run with a few randomly selected user accounts before the autonomous streaming is made accessible to everyone.

Spotify Launches New Audio Format Providing Fully-Licensed Music for Chat Shows

Spotify Launches New Audio Format Providing Fully-Licensed Music for Chat Shows Spotify is marrying music and the spoken word in a unique and potentially game-changing new format. In what is being billed as “a new type of audio experience,” starting today the streaming service will allow artists and creators to produce shows that merge talk segments with complete, unedited music tracks “in one harmonious listening experience.” Listeners can interact with the featured music as they normally would, by liking, saving and getting more information about a track without leaving the show page or searching for the song manually.

The users who can already access the function now have several options in their app: As a playback source, as usual the iPhone or an existing Spotify Connect loudspeaker can be selected; in addition, a clock symbol can be clicked on the test user accounts, which the Apple Watch itself determines as the playback source.

Autonomous streaming already possible via other apps

According to Techcrunch, Spotify is by no means the first music service to have developed autonomous streaming for the Apple Watch. For example, the US Internet radio Pandora created a separate streaming function in the Apple Watch app back in February of this year. And even over Apple Music itself, users have been able to stream their favorite podcast separately from the iPhone for a long time.

update to be made globally available

Spotify has now confirmed the start of the test phase for the autonomous streaming application to Techcrunch: "We are concentrating on the development of experiences with which users can listen to Spotify where and whenever they want - regardless of the Device or the platform, "explained a Spotify spokesman to the tech portal. "After an initial test phase, we are now introducing streaming functions for Spotify on the Apple Watch," the insider confirmed afterwards. In addition, according to TechCrunch, it was assured that the update will be globally available to everyone; however, no information was given at the time of the update.

The podcast landscape changed dramatically this week with Joe Rogan taking his show exclusively to Spotify. The move, Alex Kantrowitz of the Big Technology newsletter said, represents both a brilliant strategic decision by Spotify and an indictment of Apple's podcasting game plan.
