Microsoft Corp. says it has reached an agreement to buy GitHub Inc., a code repository company popular with many software developers, for $ 7 . 5 billion in stock. The acquisition announced Monday provides a way forward for San Francisco-based GitHub

Microsoft Corp. is buying GitHub Inc. for $ 7 . 5 billion in stock, bringing in house a community of 28 million programmers who publish code openly and extending a shift away from a strategy of shrouding its software in secrecy.

Microsoft's Nat Friedman will take over as the Chief Executive of San Francisco-headquartered GitHub, whose current CEO Chris Wanstrath will become a Microsoft technical fellow.

Microsoft last year shut down CodePlex, its own rival for GitHub, saying the latter was the dominant location for open source sharing and that most such projects had already migrated there.

On an adjusted basis, Microsoft expects the deal to add to its operating income in fiscal 2020 and reduce earnings per share by less than 1 percent in 2019 and 2020.

The transaction is expected to close by the end of the calendar year.
