Weekend Reads crisis summit between Schalke and Bremen
Bayern routs Schalke 8-0 in record win for Bundesliga opener
BERLIN — The new Bundesliga began in an empty stadium on Friday with eight-time defending champion Bayern Munich routing Schalke 8-0 for a record in the league's opening match. And it should have been more. Germany winger Leroy Sané starred and scored on his Bayern debut and Jamal Musiala became Bayern's youngest ever goalscorer at 17 years, 205 days, but otherwise it was business as usual as they totally dominated and the visitors tried limiting the damage. Schalke's winless run stretched to 17 games, while Bayern extended its winning run to 22. Serge Gnabry scored a hat trick and Sané set up two of the goals.
Schalke appoints Manuel Baum as coach to end winless run .
GELSENKIRCHEN, Germany — Schalke hired Manuel Baum as coach on Wednesday amid a club-record run of 18 games without a victory. Baum agreed to a two-year contract with the Bundesliga club. The coach of the Germany under-18 team previously led Augsburg in the Bundesliga from 2016 until last year. Baum takes over from David Wagner, who started the 2019-20 season strongly before the winless run began in January. Schalke’s current league campaign started with an 8-0 loss at Bayern Munich followed by a 3-1 loss to Werder Bremen at home on Saturday. Wagner was fired on Sunday. Baum's first game in charge will be at Leipzig on Saturday.
