After the death of a South Korean gunned down last week by North Korean soldiers, the victim's brother refuses to believe the official version of Seoul for whom the man jumped from the South Korean boat aboard which he was found, in order to defect.

“They keep talking about family problems and my brother's debts. But does that mean that 50 to 60% of South Koreans are defecting? asked Mr. Lee at a press conference in Seoul.

North Korea has denied involvement in the killing and argued that Mr. Kim died of a heart attack. Mr. Kim, 45, was the eldest son of the North Korean leader Kim Jong-il, and had once been seen as the most likely person He told Japanese officials that he wanted to take his family to Tokyo Disneyland.

South Korean media named the victim early on Tuesday but the Malaysian authorities initially only reported the sudden death of an unnamed North Korean national Police then released a statement which quoted the victim ' s travel document identifying him as "Kim Chol", born on 10 June 1970.

Gambling debts

" I spoke to him two days before his death and not once did he mention or give the impression that he was going to defect" .

In a press conference earlier, the Coast Guard said the investigation suggested that the victim had intentionally jumped out of the boat to reach the North.

"Certain circumstances in which he expressed his intention to defect to North Korea have also been confirmed," , a Coast Guard official told reporters.

He added that a suicide attempt was highly unlikely as the victim was wearing a life jacket. Lee's debts, incurred primarily through gambling, amounted to 330 million won (€ 240,000), he continued.

A "devoted" official

The victim's brother however assured that Lee had always been a "devoted" official . "I sincerely implore President Kim Jong Un of North Korea to return my brother," , Lee said.

The South Korean authorities said they were still looking for the remains.

Pyongyang said its military had in fact only burned down a float that Lee used, for fear of the spread of the coronavirus.

South Korea has asked the North for a joint investigation, a request to which Pyongyang has not responded. North Korea said on Sunday it would launch its own search for the body.
