SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Authorities have arrested a 67-year-old man at an assisted living facility on suspicion of burglary. The man, Craig Bowcut, is being described as a “habitual thief” for allegedly sneaking into the apartments of fellow residents to pocket their cigarettes.

The police affidavit indicates that Bowcut was caught in the act on July 27 when he entered another resident’s apartment to steal cigarettes. Victims of his theft have expressed their fears to law enforcement, claiming they no longer feel safe in their own homes.

One of the victims called the Salt Lake City Police after she reportedly saw Bowcut in her apartment, reaching around for her wallet. She confronted him, but Bowcut seemingly ignored her and kept searching.

Previously, Bowcut was found with this victim’s wallet after taking it from her apartment, and he is also known for possessing Marlborough Reds, a type of cigarette brand that only this particular resident smokes. The police discovered a pack of those cigarettes on Bowcut during his arrest on the 27th.

An additional eyewitness from the facility spotted Bowcut leaving the victim’s apartment that day. Reports suggest that several others in the building have complained about Bowcut entering their apartments without permission.

According to the arresting officer, Bowcut does not have any diagnosed cognitive issues. However, the facility’s staff have raised alarms about their inability to protect residents from his actions, stating that the situation has reached a critical point.
