Last December, what started as an uneventful morning for a family in Palm Desert took a dramatic turn. In a surprising twist, it blossomed into a crime scene and led to an arrest months later.
Deputies from the Palm Desert Sheriff’s Station first caught wind of the burglary through social media while scrolling through posts on December 18, 2024. At about 11:40 a.m., they stumbled upon a message hinting at a theft occurring in the area. This prompted them to investigate further, eventually leading to a residence on Krug Avenue.
When authorities reached out to the victim, they learned that just a few hours prior, around 8 a.m., surveillance footage had recorded an unidentified man breaking into their home while the family was inside. The cameras clearly showed the intruder departing with an electric bike.
With this vital evidence in hand, the Robbery and Burglary Suppression Team began connecting the dots, ultimately identifying their suspect: Alex Lopez, a 30-year-old resident of Indio.
For several months, the case remained open until deputies announced on August 29, 2025, that they had tracked Lopez down. Collaborating with the Special Enforcement Team, investigators found him at the intersection of Jackson Street and Highway 111 in Indio at around 5 p.m., where he was arrested without any issues.
Lopez has since been booked into the John Benoit Detention Center on charges of first-degree residential burglary.
The investigation is still ongoing, and authorities are reaching out for assistance; they urge anyone with more information to contact Deputy Pouchoulen at the Palm Desert Sheriff’s Station by calling (760) 836-1600.
