Prosecutors in South Korea are requesting that the court impose prison sentences on the YouTubers from the right-wing channel HoverLab. This comes in response to their spread of misinformation regarding President Lee Jae-myung. One significant lie put forth was that President Lee had spent time in a juvenile detention facility.
During the concluding sessions of the case held at the Seoul Central District Court, the prosecutors proposed that the lawyer Kang Yong-seok be given a sentence of 18 months in prison, while HoverLab’s CEO Kim Se-ui should face 12 months behind bars. These charges stem from their promotion of false information, breaching the Public Official Election Act.
The trial for Kang and the others began in September 2022 as a result of their claims on YouTube that suggested Lee had been locked up as a youth. It’s worth noting that similar allegations were echoed by professor Morse Tan from Liberty University during his recent trip to South Korea.
Furthermore, Kang and co-defendants face accusations of hinting at marital issues involving the presidential couple. This speculation arose after first lady Kim Hae-kyung was involved in an accident at their home back in November 2021. Both Kang and Kim Se-ui are set to hear the verdict on their sentences on August 20.
