CHICAGO (WGN) — Just as Ting Chui and his daughter arrived home, a shocking incident unfolded with an armed man charging toward them. Surveillance footage caught the moment the attacker pointed a gun at Chui and hit him in the head, leading to a traumatic experience for both.

“It was extremely frightening,” said Chui. “In that moment, you just react and can’t think clearly.”

The horrifying robbery occurred right outside their house in Bridgeport, close to the intersection of 26th Street and Emerald Avenue, around 3:16 p.m. Chui had just picked his daughter up from school when the violence erupted.

As the video reveals, another man jumped in to snatch Chui’s belongings while a third accomplice sped off in his car. According to police, at least two of the thieves escaped driving the stolen vehicle.

Hours later, law enforcement was able to find the car in the Lawndale neighborhood on South Maplewood Avenue.

Meanwhile, Chui’s daughter, still holding onto her treat bag from school, was in shock during the chaos. “She started crying throughout the ordeal. I felt so helpless—I really couldn’t comfort her, but thankfully, she is starting to recover,” Chui shared.

They had planned to go trick-or-treating that night for Halloween, but that idea faded away after the traumatic experience.

“This is really affecting our sleep; we’re both pretty shaken up,” Chui expressed.

The incident has brought the neighbors together, with many lining the streets to express their anger and concern over the surge in violent crime in their neighborhood. They are calling for heightened police patrols to ensure residents feel safe.

“We desperately need more security. This is happening way too often. Just down the street, a young woman was killed. We’ve had enough,” one neighbor remarked.

No arrests have been made yet, but a reward of $6,000 is available for anyone who can provide information leading to the apprehension of the suspects.
