Throwback Timeline:

August 17, 1909: “Plans for the new Shubert theater, to be situated at 220-224 North Michigan Street, are underway. The owners, Elmer and Harry Strayer, finished negotiations today and signed the lease just after noon. A variety of smaller buildings on the proposed site will soon be demolished, making way for construction to begin.”

August 18, 1919: “The riveting lecture given by Mlle. Marie Rose Lauler this afternoon at the Chautauqua captured the saga of modern France, focusing especially on the ravaged northern region. She recounted her time as a captive of the German army, emphasizing the ‘Spirit of the Women of France’ and how their courage thwarted the enemy’s ambitions.”

August 19, 1928: “This afternoon at Playland Park, a mini civil war will erupt on the baseball diamond as the St ker Athletics face off against their rivals, Bendix Brakes. These two teams are always gunning for the Northern Indiana Baseball Association title and local fan support.”

August 20, 1938: “David M. Raymond, 34, faced a scare when he suffered from a lack of air while cleaning a water softener at the Michiana hotel. Thankfully, he was rushed to St. Joseph Hospital, received treatment, and was soon discharged.”

August 21, 1946: “As the veterans administration prepares to take over Billings General Hospital in Indianapolis for the fourth state hospital, the Hoosier Camp and Hospital Council of the American Red Cross highlights the growing demand for more hospital resources for veterans.”

August 22, 1958: “A wild scene unfolded in Edwardsburg as Indiana and Michigan State Police were on the hunt for a makeshift bandit who managed to lock four bank staff into a vault, grabbed over $5,000, and make a hasty exit before roadblocks could be established.”

August 23, 1969: “Kaiser Jeep in South Bend marked the end of another successful summer youth employment program with a celebratory luncheon in Club Lido. The initiative has encouraged youth to step into adult roles at work, as praised by Gerald Hart, coordinator of their Equal Employment Opportunity project.”
