Alan Cumming is gearing up for his return as Nightcrawler in Avengers: Doomsday, and boy, is he spilling the beans on what’s going down!
After playing the fan-favorite teleporting mutant in 2003’s X2: X-Men United, Cumming is diving back into the Marvel universe again, but this time, filming has been a whole new ball game.
In a chat with Movie Clips, he mentioned that the new film feels like, well, he put it hilariously as a ‘superhero o***.’ Cumming said, “There’s so many people in it! I really feel for the poor person who had to schedule all of this. There are about 30 of the busiest actors in the world!”
This epic cast features some familiar faces from the X-Men like Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, and Rebecca Romijn. Plus, newcomers are on board like Vanessa Kirby, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, blending the old and new!
Cumming also shared that much of his filming was done solo. He quipped, “I filmed the whole thing in isolation, with lots of green screens and face replacements. They even gave everyone fake names! Half the time, I had no clue who I was acting alongside!” He couldn’t help but chuckle at how silly it all sounded.
Adding to the humor, he recalled an embarrassing slip-up from the past: “I totally broke the internet once by mentioning something I shouldn’t have—although, I might have gotten it wrong!”
Previously, Cumming had his apprehensions about returning to the role due to the grueling makeup processes that Nightcrawler required. But thank goodness for modern technology! He’s found the new effects to be way easier, making it possible to jump back into the role without so much hassle.
Marvel confirmed his return during a mega five-hour live event unveiling 27 cast members. This upcoming crossover is already shaping up to be not just any project, but one of the most ambitious yet, combining characters from the Avengers, Fantastic Four, X-Men, and much more!
Even Robert Downey Jr. is part of the action, reprising his role as Doctor Doom, the main villain this time. The Russo brothers are directing, with scriptwriting duties handled by Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely.
As expected, Cumming can’t help but generate excitement—and drama—with his knack for letting out spoilers! During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, he poked fun at his own reputation, discussing jokes with The Fantastic Four: First Steps cast. At one moment, Pedro Pascal chimed in teasingly about his leak history: “The biggest leak we’ve had comes from our host!”
Cumming then acknowledged that a slip about a fight scene between Nightcrawler and Mister Fantastic didn’t go over well. He joked, “My publicist had to call me about that! You do not want to incur their wrath!”
Mark your calendars! Avengers: Doomsday is slated to hit theaters in the US on December 18, 2026, followed by Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027. With Alan Cumming back and such a star-st cast, this film is bound to be one for the books!
