J.K. Rowling Calls Out Former ‘Harry Potter’ Director on His Gender Beliefs Critique

On Monday, author J.K. Rowling didn’t hold back when she called out former collaborator Chris Columbus, asking him to clarify which of her “gender and sex beliefs” he disagrees with.

She took to X (formerly Twitter) to say, “As another male colleague who worked with me expresses his sadness over my beliefs about gender and sex, I figured it would be helpful to make a quick list for reference. What do you think has upset actors and directors who aren’t part of the HBO Harry Potter reboot?”

Rowling posed several pointed questions: “Is it my stance that women and girls should have their own restrooms and changing areas? That male-only rape crisis centers should be a thing?” she mentioned in her post. “Is it that men should not participate in women’s sports? That female inmates should not be housed with dangerous men and male offenders?”

She continued her list of principles, asserting: “I believe in the importance of freedom of speech and belief in a diverse democracy” and “I think that vulnerable youth, particularly those who identify as gay, come from autistic backgrounds, or have experienced trauma, deserve mental health care rather than irreversible surgeries or medications with zero proven benefits.”

Many believe Rowling’s comments were a direct response to a recent interview with Columbus, director of the initial two Harry Potter movies, who shared in The Times of London that he hopes to adapt the stage play “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” into a film, mentioning that Rowling’s political views might make that complex.

Columbus stated, “It’s unlikely because the situation has become so complicated with all the political issues. Everyone involved has different opinions, which really complicates things when it comes to working with her.” He acknowledged the rift in support for Rowling among the original cast members.

He continued, “It’s been about ten years since I last spoke with Ms. Rowling, so I have no idea how her views have changed. However, I stay in close touch with Daniel Radcliffe, and I recently chatted with him. My relationships with the cast are still strong.”
