On the December 20, 2025 episode of Saturday Night Live (SNL), which was hosted by Ariana Grande and featured Cher as the musical guest, a moment from the Weekend Update segment truly stole the show.
Michael Che couldn’t resist throwing shade at Colin Jost, making a particularly insensitive quip about Jost’s famous spouse during the ‘Christmas joke swap,’ leaving Jost embarrassed and hiding his face in his hands.
The Christmas segment caught Jost off guard. Usually, he and Che take turns reading jokes from each other for laughs. But Jost was under the impression that they had decided to ditch this for the holiday special.
To his shock, Che had him read several uncomfortable jokes, one of which took aim at Scarlett.
Che’s tasteless joke insinuated that women quit their jobs because of menopause, strongly implying it was something Jost would have to deal with, suggesting he would soon be at the end of his ride on the ‘gravy train’ with his 41-year-old wife.
Details on Michael Che’s Uncomfortable Joke about Scarlett
When the Weekend Update rolled around, Che casually informed viewers of the supposed ‘tradition’ between him and Jost regarding reading each other’s unrehearsed and unseen jokes.
Jost looked confused, reminding Che that he hadn’t prepped any jokes this time because he thought they had mutually agreed to stop.
“That’s funny because you said we weren’t doing this this year. I didn’t write any jokes for you,” Jost noted with a hint of annoyance.
Despite his doubts, Jost forged ahead with the jokes, which included racially charged material about currency and sensitive topics concerning abuse survivors, topped off with another jab about Scarlett.
“Recent studies suggest that numerous women leave the workforce due to menopause, which could mean I’m running out of years on my gravy train,” Jost read aloud.
Laughing through the embarrassment, Jost couldn’t help but react as a photo of Scarlett flashed onscreen while he continued:
“My girl always tells me, ‘Colin, I’m warm. Colin, I’m sweating.’ Listen, you’re having a hot flash, babe, don’t sweat it! I’ve got a backup; after all, they don’t call Wednesday ‘hump day’ for nothing.”
With that, he dropped his head in chagrin as Jenna Ortega’s Wednesday character appeared on screen.
Che teased Jost further by saying how he wouldn’t have made such a remark, cleverly inferring that Jost might ditch Scarlett for the younger Ortega.
This isn’t the first time Che has targeted Scarlett since her marriage to Jost in 2020, as she has become a frequent punchline on the show.
Back in 2024, during an episode of Table for Two with Bruce Bozzi, Jost shared how it felt reading jokes about his partner.
“It’s wild. There’s hardly any live TV left in the world. So knowing you’re on air, saying something you haven’t seen beforehand? That’s pretty wild, and it’s rarely gentle!”
Scarlett, for her part, discussed in a 2021 appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show how unnerving it is to be the subject of jokes on SNL, admitting she watches the show with a mix of excitement and anxiety, fearing it could go off the rails at any moment.
Nevertheless, she acknowledged this unpredictability is what makes SNL unique; after all, everything happens in real-time.
