This past Tuesday on LIVE with Kelly & Mark, Kelly Ripa was put on the spot as her husband, Mark Consuelos, took jabs at her home state, New Jersey. The playful argument sparked when Mark reminisced about their early days together and their move to NJ.
“I couldn’t believe how you couldn’t make a left turn anywhere,” Mark exclaimed, to which Kelly shot back, “Well, it does change how you get around! I never go left anymore!”
In an effort to ensure safer roads, New Jersey is known for its unique jughandle design for left turns. Mark was quick to admit that he was on the receiving end of Kelly’s disbelief during that trip when he couldn’t stop venting about the state’s quirks. “I think I might have dropped the word ‘communist’ during the trip,” he admitted. After a pit stop at a gas station where he was bewildered that someone pumped gas for him, things escalated. “By then, you’d really lost it!”
Kelly promptly agreed, adding how she fired back with a comment questioning why Mark didn’t just move back to Tampa. She made it clear how riled up she became at her husband’s critiques about New Jersey. “If Tampa is that fabulous, then you know what? Go back there and pump your own gas!” she stated, emphasizing that most people feel grateful for the service.
Mark made a bold statement, saying, “It feels un-American not to pump your own gas!” For context, New Jersey is the only state where customers aren’t allowed to fill up their own tanks. Kelly countered with, many folks can’t even tell which side the gas cap is on, but Mark remained self-assured, claiming, “You glance at the gauge, and it guides you!”
Kelly humorously replied that one can’t just naturally know which side is the gas cap’s home before Mark quizzed her if she even knew where the gauge was. Her answer? “Not a clue; I’m from New Jersey! They handle that for me!” The couple has been living in an impressive $27 million townhouse on Manhattan’s Upper East Side for the past 12 years. They turned the lavish space, inspired by Old Hollywood and film Mommie Dearest, into a splendid home. Together, they have three kids: Michael, 28, Lola, 24, and Joaquin, 22.
