Ever wondered what it takes to be a top exec when the workday comes to an end? The pressures of the C-suite are high, with juggling responsibilities, endless work hours, and lots of scrutiny. But life outside of the office has its own unique set of challenges.
In Fortune’s latest series, “The Good Life”, we explore how today’s business leaders spend their time when they’re not calling the shots at work. Today, let’s dive into the world of Malik Ducard, the 52-year-old chief content officer at Pinterest. If you haven’t heard, Pinterest is the favorite place for over 578 million creative minds.
Before stepping into the fancy world of digital aesthetics and DIY guides, Ducard was a tech and content fanatic from the Bronx. He started making documentaries and short films as a kid, always eager to blend storytelling with technology—from flipbooks to coding on his Commodore 64.
Ducard’s journey through the business domain led him to notable names like MGM, Lionsgate, and Google. He played a pivotal role in launching YouTube Kids, sharing he couldn’t be prouder seeing his own child use the app that he helped create.
With a wealth of experience compiled over 30 years, Ducard is determined to keep Pinterest booming as it reaches incredible milestones. Recently, they reported a 17% revenue boost year-over-year, raking in a nice $38.76 million. Ducard observed that Gen Z makes up over half of their user base, and he’s surprised that about 80% of members are located outside the U.S. The secret to success? Ducard says they are tackling an “authenticity deficit” in a sea of social media influencers seeking clout. The platform is all about fulfilling aspirations and sharing ideas rather than chasing numbers.
“Our positivity-first approach seems to be doing the trick, separating us from a toxic online culture,” Ducard explains, noting that Pinterest is a comforting space for the younger audience looking for inspiration.
Ducard is also keen on nurturing new partnerships. Recently, Pinterest teamed up with Emma Chamberlain on a co-branded coffee blend inspired by trending concepts on the platform. They also collaborated with Wayman and Micah, stylists for Colman Domingo, to create curated boards that fueled his iconic Met Gala looks. When the day winds down, Ducard continues to explore creativity and innovation, channeling his passion into 3D printing and experimenting with fashion.
Finances and Lifestyle
Fortune: Have kids? What does your childcare look like?
I’ve got three Gen Z kids, aged 23, 20, and 17. While we’re transitioning from necessary childcare to them seeking our advice, it’s a long way from being empty nesters!
Where do you live—luxury digs or suburban bliss?
I call Los Angeles home, nestled right in the city. It’s a cozy area that some might now even notice. We’re happy here, and we’ve stayed put for over 17 years.
How’s your commute?
I work remotely most of the time, but I do grab my electric car for visits to our office in San Francisco and occasionally to our L.A. spot.
Do you carry a wallet?
Yep! Plus, I’ve got a card from a local boutique toy store owner. One of my interests is 3D printing cute games and toys—she’s interested in selling one of my trademark designs, a funky mechanical tic-tac-toe!
Daily essentials
One subscription you can’t live without?
The Guitar Tab app for song notes, and I can’t forget ChatGPT, Shapr3D for CAD design, and keeping up with the Sunday New York Times.
Got a favorite wristwatch?
I trust my Garmin Health GPS watch.
Coffee habits?
I make my coffee with a Jura machine at home. But when I’m out, my go-to has to be a cappuccino with oat milk—Blue Bottle is a top pick, and in San Francisco, Nirvana Soul is amazing; just try their macadamia milk cappuccino!
Tell us about dining out:
I eat out maybe once or twice weekly; I usually prefer cooking meals! Hilltop Cafe in L.A. is a great choice, and for sit-ups with clients, I love following it up with a good burger or branzino at Akasha.
Grocery shopping?
Mainly Whole Foods.
Work wardrobe shopped where?
Joining Pinterest sparked a fashion upgrade! Now, I aim to express myself with more colors and styles, choosing pieces that reflect me, not just a brand label.
Typical outfit at work?
Casual jeans, a comfy collared shirt, or sometimes button-ups or t-shirts.
Fun gadgets and daily unwind
Do you own any cool gadgets?
I’ve got a Bambu X1-Carbon 3D printer and a VR Quest 3. My son turns to me to try out games! I also meditate with a Muse headband that tracks my brainwaves, enhancing my calm state. Not to mention my reMarkable tablet.
How do you unwind?
Dance it out on the Peloton treadmill, meditation, writing, and getting lost in 3D printing relaxes me. Plus, I took up the guitar during the pandemic, which revived my forever passion for jazz—I even used to have a radio gig in college!
Your next vacation destination?
Heading back to family and friends in New York and New Jersey sounds great! I also like visiting family in St. Croix as they heavily impacted my childhood. And who knows, maybe Greece is next?
How much leave do you take?
Got to love the unlimited PTO advantage at Pinterest—it’s a game changer!
