Among those arrested is Portland Trail Blazers’ coach Chauncey Billups, a celebrated player turned coach, who was apprehended in Portland, Oregon. Alongside him is Los Angeles Lakers’ player Terry Rozier, who was taken into custody in Orlando while playing for the Miami Heat. This bombshell news has sent shockwaves across the NBA, prompting the league to put them on administrative leave as they team up with law enforcement agencies in the investigation.
The investigations circle two main federal cases. The first probes a sports betting operation involving current and former players, some of whom are believed to have falsely claimed injuries. Out of the arrests, a total of 31 individuals face charges in the poker game scheme, which prosecutors say ties back to notorious organized crime families recognized by law enforcement. Rozier finds himself among the six broke players snagged in the first wave of arrests, while Billups joins a wider group of 31 snagged for betting violations.
FBI Director Kash Patel described the scale of the operation as “extraordinary,” sharing that the coordination stretched across 11 states. He noted that this case hit straight at the heart of NBA fraud while also addressing the notorious La Cosa Nostra, spotlighting several well-known crime families.
“We weren’t just cracking down on betting fraud within the NBA, it’s linked deeply to crime syndicates with dreadful histories,” Patel said.
Allegations Of Sophisticated Cheating
Joseph Nocella, the U.S. Attorney for New York’s Eastern District, dropped some heavy claims regarding how the betting operations were conducted. It seems some players got way too crafty, using advanced tech to manipulate outcomes. Sources claim that unidentified co-conspirators set up secret self-shuffling machines adjusted to identify player hand strengths and relayed this privileged info to others – seriously wild stuff.
In Rozier’s case, he reportedly offered inside information that was only privy to select people within the league, cashing in on bets made on teams his Charlotte Hornets loads played against — huge amounts in the hundreds of thousands have been reported.
One notable scenario showcased Rozier supposedly planning to decline playing a portion of a game due to an alleged injury that hadn’t been shared publicly. This tip-off led to significant betting on him underperforming his projected stats. When he did take himself out during a game in March 2023, his co-conspirator made a pretty penny from the bets by selling this inside scoop.
In yet another twist earlier this year, the same betting ring also got wind that players with the Portland Trail Blazers would intentionally skip a game requesting better wins in the upcoming draft, ironically leading to more bets paid out on losses in a mutual agreement.
Involvement of Damon Jones
Damon Jones is caught red-handed attempting to sell insider info about prominent NBA players, including potential injury statuses. In one famous example, he relayed secret information about a certain LeBron James before a key matchup resulting in substantial bets—and the Lakers took a hit after news broke of James’ absence.
Amidst all this drama, Rozier’s attorney, James Trusty, maintained his client’s role as a mere associated individual, saying that the FBI went as far as crowning him a suspect while they sought to make flashy arrests that burdened professional athletes with unwarranted scrutiny.
Billups faced a brief initial court appearance in Oregon, respecting conditions set forth by the authorities, while prosecutors explained the extent of the fraudulent poker ring reaching upwards of millions scammed via rigged games across multiple venues including New York and Miami.

Interestingly enough, this isn’t the first drama involving illegal betting for the NBA scandal train; just recently former player Gilbert Arenas was charged with running an illicit betting and poker operation from a California residence.
