'Ocean Cleanup' ship sweeps first Pacific plastic
A special ship designed to clean the oceans has harvested its first plastic from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch since setting sail from San Francisco last month, its Dutch inventor said Wednesday. The project by The Ocean Cleanup, a Dutch non-profit group, involves a supply ship towing a floating boom that corrals marine plastic with the aim of cleaning half of the infamous patch within five years. "Today we announce that our cleaning system in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch has been catching plastic for the first time," Boyan Slat, the 25-year-old Dutch CEO and founder of The Ocean Cleanup, told a press conference in Rotterdam.
One man is dead and one man was taken into a police station for questioning after an overnight scuffle in College Park.
Prince George's County Police said they were called to the 5100 block of College Avenue just before 2 a.m. Sunday for a towing dispute when they found the men involved in an altercation.
The two men were separated when police found one of the men unresponsive according to officials.
Police performed CPR on the man until paramedics arrived to the scene.
Woman booked on suspicion of murder after car runs down pedestrians in Cupertino park
A woman was booked into jail on suspicion of murder after running down two pedestrians, and killing one, with her car in a Cupertino park, authorities said Wednesday. The suspect, who has not been identified, was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail, said Sgt. Michael Low, a Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office spokesman. Authorities did not release the suspect’s identity but said she is in her 50s. “At this point, it does not appear to be an accident,” Low said.Deputies responded just before 1 p.m. Tuesday to reports that a vehicle struck two pedestrians in the Rancho San Antonio Park and drove away, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
The man was taken to the hospital where he died, according to police.
The second man was taken into a police station for questioning.
Officials are investigating what lead to the altercation and death.
No charges have been filed at this time.
