One person is dead and seven others are injured after a two-vehicle crash involving a van carrying special needs students in Westwood on Monday.

The crash took place around 11:56 a.m. on Lafeuille Circle and Harrison Avenue when a car went left of center, crashing into an Oak Hills school van transporting special needs high school students.

The driver of the car was pronounced dead, police said.

School officials said six high school students and two adults were in the van at the time of the crash. The students were on their way to work sites to have job experiences, officials said.

Seven of those in the van were taken to UC Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police. Details on the seven people transported have not been released.

School officials said families have been notified and staff personnel and special education staff are on their way to the hospital.

The Traffic Unit is continuing to investigate the crash, officials said. The intersection will remain closed for a few hours, police said.
