Charles Van Doren, the disgraced '50s-era quiz show contestant who was found to have received the answers in advance, has died. He was 93. His son John told the New York Times that Van Doren died at a retirement community in Geer Village, Connecticut, where he had lived for several years. Van Doren was an English instructor at Columbia University and the son of Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and critic Mark Van Doren and novelist and writer Dorothy Van Doren.

Niven starred as legendary University of Kansas basketball coach Phog Allen in Jayhawkers (2014), written and directed by Kevin Willmott, a University of Kansas professor and recent Oscar screenplay winner for BlacKkKlansman.

At the conclusion of the long-running CBS sitcom Alice in 1985, Niven portrayed a country singer who sweeps Linda Lavin's title character off her feet and takes her to Nashville to fulfill her dream of becoming a singer as well. He and Lavin were married in real life from 1982-92.
Early in his career, Niven played Alan "Red" Astrachan, one of the traffic cops — Tim Matheson, David Soul and Robert Urich were the others — who take matters into their own hands in the Dirty Harry sequel Magnum Force (1973), starring Clint Eastwood.
On Broadway, he appeared in the 1991 musical comedy Nick and Nora, and he was the Rev. Tom Marshall on episodes of CBS' The Waltons and in a pair of subsequent telefilms.
Clifford Niven was born on May 27, 1945, in Kansas City and raised in the suburb of Prairie Village. He attended Shawnee Mission East High School and studied theater at the University of Kansas. One of his first onscreen roles came in a 1972 installment of Night Gallery.

Niven returned to live in the Kansas City area in the 1990s and launched the Equity Actors' Readers’ Theatre (EARTh), which staged dramatic readings of plays. He worked often on local stages and was set to perform in The Wizard of Oz at the Starlight Theater in June.
Survivors include his life partner, Claudia, and his children Maggie, Kate and Jim.

Former Greensboro Valedictorian Dies After Being Pulled From Eno River
A Greensboro man and UNC student died after being rescued from the water at Eno River State Park last week. Karriem Eric Jenkins, 20, was swimming in the Eno River on May 15 when Durham Police received a distress call. He was taken to the hospital where life-saving measures were taken, police said. Jenkins, who went by Eric, was the Valedictorian at the Middle College at NC A&T in 2016. Jenkins was a UNC student from August 2016 to April 2019, the university confirmed. He was studying biology. The call came in just after 3 p.m. on May 15, according to an incident report. He died Thursday morning. A funeral service for Jenkins will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m.

Woman dies after being shot overnight, Greenville deputies arrest suspect, officials say
Greenville County deputies are investigating a shooting that sent a woman to a hospital where she later died. The coroner identified her as Shane Victoria Bowen, 34, of Hodges. The shooting happened Saturday on Mountain Creek Road in Honea Path. Greenville deputies have arrested a suspect. © AFP The death of photographer Abbas, figure of the agency Magnum The Iranian-born photographer Abbas, one of the pillars of the agency Magnum, which has covered many conflicts and revolutions in the world, died Wednesday in Paris at the age of 74, Magnum announced. "He was a godfather for a whole generation of young photojournalists," says Magnum president Thomas Dworzak on the agency's website. "An Iranian transplanted to Paris, Abbas was a citizen of the world that he kept documenting, with his wars, his disasters, his revolutions and his uprisings," he adds.
Abbas, who joined Magnum in 1981 after working for the Sipa and Gamma agencies, reported on Biafra, Bangladesh, Vietnam, the Middle East, Iran, Chile, Cuba and South Africa. South during apartheid.
From 1978 to 1980, Abbas had covered the Islamic revolution in his country, before living a voluntary exile of seventeen years. An experience that led him to embark later on a long-term project on major religions. Combining exhibitions and books, he was first interested in the rise of Islamism around the world ("Allah O Akbar: a journey into militant Islam"), before focusing on Christianity in 2000, then on animism, Buddhism (2008 to 2010) and Hinduism (2013).
Abbas had also traveled to Mexico, between 1983 and 1986, and tried to describe the contradictions of this country in the manner of a novelist, focusing on society and the daily lives of the inhabitants. Woman dies after being shot overnight, Greenville deputies arrest suspect, officials say.
Greenville County deputies are investigating a shooting that sent a woman to a hospital where she later died. The coroner identified her as Shane Victoria Bowen, 34, of Hodges. The shooting happened Saturday on Mountain Creek Road in Honea Path. Greenville deputies have arrested a suspect. Deputies have not said what led to the shooting, or released information about the suspect. The name of the suspected shooter has not been released.
