Eric Adams Exits the NYC Mayoral Race

Estimated read time 2 min read

On Sunday, Eric Adams, the Mayor of New York City, revealed that he is stepping back from his re-election campaign. This decision was driven largely by the recurring media rumors and the campaign finance board’s choice to hold back significant funding, severely impacting his ability to compete effectively.

This turn of events may give a significant advantage to former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who is now running as an independent against the Democratic contender Zohran Mamdani.

  • Trump has previously suggested that both Adams and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa should bow out to facilitate a head-to-head showdown between Cuomo and Mamdani.
  • He mentioned, “If it were just a one-on-one, Cuomo might have a chance,” while branding Mamdani as a “communist.”

Interestingly, reports have surfaced indicating that Trump’s administration was contemplating nominating Adams as the U.S. ambassador to Saudi Arabia to encourage him to withdraw from the race.

Adams’ choice to withdraw heightens the pressure on Curtis Sliwa, who had asserted—even just last week—that he intended to remain in the contest, despite considerable insistence from affluent New Yorkers to concede.

In his announcement video, Adams remarked, “The continuous media speculation regarding my future and the campaign finance board’s withholding of funds has hampered my chances of generating the financial support necessary for a viable campaign.” He concluded by saying, “Even with the progress we’ve made, I can no longer pursue my campaign for re-election.” Watch the full video here.
