Washington — According to multiple lawmakers, the FBI has launched an investigation into six Democratic Congress members following accusations from President Trump claiming they engaged in “seditious behavior.”
Last week, this group appeared in a video specifically urging military personnel and intelligence officials to resist what they termed as “illegal orders.”
On Tuesday, four of the lawmakers disclosed that FBI representatives had reached out to the House and Senate sergeant at arms to set up interviews with them.
Senator Elissa Slotkin from Michigan confirmed on Tuesday that the FBI’s counterterrorism division informed them on Monday night that “they are opening what seems to be an inquiry against the six of us.”
The lawmakers involved in this situation include Slotkin herself, Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona, Representatives Jason Crow from Colorado, Chris Deluzio from Pennsylvania, Maggie Goodlander of New Hampshire, and Chrissy Houlahan from Pennsylvania.
Both the Department of Justice and the FBI have chosen not to comment on the matter.
While speaking at an event in her home state on the same day, Slotkin described the FBI’s actions as a “scare tactic” propagated by President Trump.
“Honestly, the president’s response and the way he’s deploying the FBI against us is precisely why we made that video,” she expressed. “He tends to use the federal government against those he perceives as adversaries, showing no fear in wielding state power against people he disputes with. He acts as if the law doesn’t apply to him… and that was exactly our intention in creating the video — to reassure individuals that they are not isolated while observing such events unfold.”
The four Congress members criticized Trump for apparently using the FBI to intimidate and harass them, asserting, “We will not succumb to bullying.”
They stated, “No level of intimidation or harassment will thwart us from fulfilling our duties and upholding the Constitution.”
Additionally, on Monday, the Pentagon mentioned it is undertaking a review of misconduct claims involving Kelly, a former U.S. Navy captain, to determine whether he should be summoned back to active duty for possible court-martial proceedings related to his role in the video.
