OSLO, Norway (AP) — Big news is on the horizon as the Norwegian Nobel Committee gears up to announce the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize this Friday, an esteemed honor that often comes with surprises.

According to experts, the committee’s selection process typically emphasizes how sustainable peace can be achieved, the importance of fostering global unity, and the narrative behind institutions that support these values.

There’s been quite a buzz leading to the announcement, with speculation about whether U.S. President Donald Trump might take home the accolade. This talk has even been partly fueled by Trump himself. However, seasoned observers of the Nobel scene suggest that his chances are still slim, despite the notable foreign policy strides he highlights.

The Peace Research Institute Oslo has highlighted some intriguing contenders, such as Sudan’s Emergency Response Rooms, a grassroots initiative that is crucial to the humanitarian efforts amid the ongoing civil conflict; the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court; and the Committee to Protect Journalists, a U.S.-based organization dedicated to safeguarding press freedom and tracking journalists who have lost their lives while on the job.

The previous year’s peace prize was awarded to Nihon Hidankyo, a grassroots effort by Japanese survivors of atomic bombings who have tirelessly campaigned against nuclear weapons for many years.

It’s worth noting that the Nobel Peace Prize is the only one of the annual Nobel prizes to be presented in Oslo, while the other categories were announced this week in Stockholm, Sweden: medicine on Monday, physics on Tuesday, chemistry on Wednesday, and literature on Thursday. The announcement for the economics prize is coming this Monday.
