Military Troops Set to Appear at National Mall

This Wednesday night, Washington, D.C. is gearing up for a notable military presence along the National Mall. President Donald Trump’s initiative aims to address rising crime levels by deploying federalized National Guard troops, as reported by a source familiar with the situation.

The hope is that when locals and visitors awake the next day, they’ll see a significant military presence in an area known for its iconic museums, monuments, and lively hot dog stands catering to tourists.

It’s a rare move to deploy troops in this relatively safe and quiet zone of the city.

The President has the authority to call upon the National Guard to safeguard federal personnel and assets during events like inaugurations or to respond to riots, as previously seen on January 6, 2021. Past presidencies have also mobilized troops during crises, such as the Los Angeles riots in 1992.

However, the purpose of Thursday’s display of military force raises questions—aside from creating a spectacle for the public and school field trips in the middle of summer.

Army representatives stated the mission focuses on providing logistical support, transportation, and administrative assistance to law enforcement while maintaining visibility around the Mall. Colonel Dave Butler, an Army spokesperson, mentioned, “Being present at the national monuments is part of our role,” during an interview with ABC News on Tuesday.

A White House official confirmed on Wednesday that a substantial number of troops would be visibly present that night.

Those close to the plan noted that the deployment would increase overnight, continuing into Thursday.

In announcing his strategy on Monday, Trump advocated for moving 800 National Guard troops into action to handle what he perceives as rampant crime in the capital and even plans to take control of the police department.

A joint task force, overseen by Army Colonel Larry Doane, will lead this operation. Even with 800 activated troops, D.C. residents should not expect to see that many on the streets at once.

The need for personnel will vary, with rotations allowing for 100 to 200 troops engaged at a time, while some will fulfill administrative roles, assisting local law enforcement.

This task force’s operations will mirror how the D.C. Guard typically handles various events and emergencies, similar to the responses seen during inaugurations or the January 6 riots. Additionally, the National Park Service will have a significant role due to its management of the Mall area.
