5 big questions for the MLB offseason
Anthony Rendon and Gerrit Cole are big MLB free agency targets. Mookie Betts and Francisco Lindor could be trade targets. Or everything could be boring! Let’s see.In the previous offseason, we didn’t see Manny Machado and Bryce Harper sign their big free agent contracts until February. J.D. Martinez was the MVP of the 2018 World Series and the Red Sox didn’t sign him until that previous February. Jake Arrieta didn’t land with the Phillies until March of 2018. Those are probably the biggest examples of what’s been a constant over the past two offseasons, which is that the free agent market has moved remarkably slow.
The Los Angeles Dodgers suffered a frustrating NLDS exit in 2019, and they look likely to make some aggressive moves in the offseason to try to prevent that from happening again.
According to, the Dodgers are likely to pursue a trade for Cleveland Indians shortstop Francisco Lindor this offseason. If such a deal did happen, incumbent shortstop Corey Seager could become a trade candidate or shift to third base.
The Dodgers are said to be more open to major changes this offseason after making more minor changes in previous offseasons. The team’s playoff failure is likely a motivating factor behind that line of thinking.
Jets coach says he has had 'productive' talks with Le’Veon Bell about his usage
The New York Jets expected Le’Veon Bell to be the focal point of their offense when they signed him to a massive contract during the offseason, but head coach Adam Gase has not put that plan into action. Coming off a game in which Bell barely got the ball, Gase has had to work through some tension with his star running back.© Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY SportsBell admitted to reporters on Thursday that he was “frustrated” with only touching the ball 12 times (nine carries and three catches) in last week’s loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Lindor hit .284 with 32 home runs last season and is a four-time All-Star. He’s also an immensely popular and charismatic player.
The shortstop, who turns 26 in November, would become a free agent after the 2021 season. The Indians have essentially confirmed that, meaning he could become a trade candidate. It remains to be seen whether they decide to try to hang on to him for one more season and dealing him before his contract year.
