Supreme Court to Fast-Track Review of Trump’s Tariffs Appeal

Estimated read time 2 min read

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court confirmed that it will quickly examine the appeal made by the Trump administration related to tariffs. This case holds considerable significance for both the economy and the power of the presidency, and a hearing is set to take place in November.

Earlier, on August 29, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit issued a ruling against the administration, stating that the law invoked by President Trump didn’t provide him with the authority he claimed. However, they put that ruling on hold to allow the appeal, which the Trump administration has now formally requested from the Supreme Court, seeking an expedited review. The court not only agreed to this request but also decided to consider another tariff-related case at the same time.

The administration portrayed the situation as urgent, arguing to the justices that the ruling from the circuit court has jeopardized crucial and delicate trade negotiations, introducing a climate of legal ambiguity around the President’s efforts to safeguard the country from a potential economic and diplomatic crisis. Trump had previously warned that a ruling against him could “literally destroy the United States of America.”

The Roberts Court has extended substantial authority to Trump in his second term, and this case presents a crucial opportunity to evaluate the extent of that power.
