On November 27, President Donald Trump shared heartbreaking news about Sarah Beckstrom, a 20-year-old member of the National Guard who was fatally shot in an ambush at the White House. This tragic event has raised questions about immigration vetting and sparks a renewed review of asylum cases amidst the ongoing investigation.
Beckstrom succumbed to her injuries, while another airman, Andrew Wolfe, 24, is reportedly now “fighting for his life.” Both were part of the West Virginia National Guard, and their heroic efforts have now been thrust into a spotlight. Trump acknowledged their sacrifices during a call with military personnel from Palm Beach, Florida, stating, “Sarah Beckstrom of West Virginia was a highly respected, magnificent person, and we’ve tragically lost her too soon.”

Beckstrom, an Army Specialist from Summersville, West Virginia, joined the National Guard in June 2023 and was an integral member of the 863rd Military Police Company, 111th Engineer Brigade, as noted in a news release from the West Virginia National Guard.
U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, from Martinsburg, West Virginia, has been serving since February 2019 as a part of the Force Support Squadron, 167 Airlift Wing, according to the same release.
Both soldiers were called into service in August to help respond to crime in the area, and the incident has raised alarms as it is being investigated as a potential terrorism act. The suspected gunman, a 29-year-old Afghan national named Rahmanullah Lakanwal, has been taken into custody.
Community Comes Together to Honor Her Memory
After the announcement on November 27, officials and community members erupted with calls for prayers and support. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi expressed her devastation on X, encouraging prayers for Wolfe as well: “Sarah’s bravery will be remembered and justice will be served,” she assured.
Kash Patel, FBI Director, painted a poignant picture of Beckstrom as a dedicated soldier whose bright future was unjustly cut short. Many are now rallying around her family, friends, and fellow service members during this difficult time.
Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth recognized Beckstrom as an “American hero” and encouraged prayers for her loved ones, while Jeanine Pirro, D.C.’s U.S. Attorney, stated she volunteered in service over Thanksgiving for people she had never met, showcasing true courage.
Former Teachers Remember Andrew Wolfe’s Kindness
Berkeley County Schools then confirmed details about Wolfe, revealing he’s also a community figure known for warmth and spirit. He graduated from Musselman High School in 2019 and was always noted for his active engagement in both academics and athletics. Principal Alicia Riggleman praised his contribution to the student body.
Counselor Christine Redstreake described Wolfe to USA TODAY as a genuinely nice individual, stating, “We’ve only heard good things about him.” This tragic separation has left communities and families deeply affected.
