Troy A. Edwards, Jr., the son-in-law of former FBI director James Comey, officially resigned from his post as a senior national security prosecutor on Thursday night. His resignation came right after Comey was indicted.
In a brief resignation letter addressed to US Attorney Lindsey Halligan, Edwards stated: “To uphold my oath to the Constitution and country, I hereby resign as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia in the Department of Justice effective immediately.”
Interestingly, Edwards was working in the same Virginia office that currently has cases against his father-in-law.
CNN reported that the cameras caught Edwards at the courthouse just as reporters were anxiously awaiting news from the grand jury regarding the indictment. He had a private conversation with the judge for about 30 minutes.
James Comey’s indictment centers on accusations of making false statements and obstructing a congressional proceeding. This legal challenge represents a significant strategy by President Donald Trump in his push against perceived political adversaries. If Comey is found guilty, he could potentially face five years behind bars.
Following the indictment, Comey shared his thoughts in an Instagram video, stating, “Let’s have a trial. And keep the faith.” He continued by expressing his distress for the Department of Justice, while firmly claiming his innocence.
This past summer, Maurene Comey, James Comey’s daughter, was dismissed from her role as a federal prosecutor in Manhattan. Subsequently, she filed a lawsuit against the Justice Department, asserting that her termination was motivated by her father’s former role as FBI director.
As a federal prosecutor, Maurene was involved in high-profile cases such as those involving Jeffrey Epstein, Ghislaine Maxwell, and Sean Combs, as well as a notable case against gynecologist Robert Hadden for sexually abusing patients.
When leaving her post, Maurene expressed in a memo: “Fear is the tool of a tyrant, wielded to suppress independent thought. Instead of fear, let this moment fuel the fire that already burns at the heart of this place – a fire of righteous indignation at abuses of power and a commitment to seek justice for victims.”
Maurene is part of a group of federal employees removed during the Trump administration who are currently challenging the legality of their dismissals through lawsuits.
