In a desperate attempt to find the person responsible for the shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, U.S. authorities are appealing to the public for assistance. They’ve just released fresh videos and images taken from the location of the violent event in Utah.
More than a day after Kirk was shot while addressing a crowd at a university, Utah’s governor, Spencer Cox, flanked by FBI director Kash Patel and other officials, emphasized, “We need all the help we can gather.” The governor called upon the public, asserting, “We can’t do this without your assistance.” So far, the FBI has received over 7,000 leads and tips regarding the case.
A newly released video captured an individual in a hat and sunglasses, dressed in a long-sleeved black shirt, seen sprinting on a rooftop before dropping down and fleeing the scene. This suspect managed to escape into a neighboring area following the single gunshot fired.
Investigators have gathered significant evidence, including a palm print, a shoe imprint, and a powerful hunting rifle that was found in a nearby wooded section following the shooter’s flight. However, law enforcement is yet to formally identify any suspects or suggest a possible motive behind the attack.
The urgent pleas for public information during the press conference highlighted the challenges officials face in tracking down the shooter. They did not take questions following the presentation, and Patel refrained from making any remarks. To encourage tips, the FBI is offering a reward of up to $100,000 for details that could lead to the suspect’s identification and arrest.
Kirk’s tragic death, an ally of former President Donald Trump, has reignited conversations around the growing concerns over political violence in the U.S., garnering bipartisan disapproval from various political leaders.
Cox addressed the rampant misinformation surrounding the incident, stating, “There’s an overwhelming amount of false information circulating online.” He further claimed that disinformation campaigns, possibly from foreign sources like Russia and China, seek to incite violence. His advice? Just ignore it.
Furthermore, the governor vowed that they would pursue the suspect vigorously, even advocating for the death penalty.
Meanwhile, Kirk’s body was flown back to his home state of Arizona aboard Air Force Two, accompanied by Vice President JD Vance. Upon landing, Vance and Kirk’s widow, Erika, stepped off the plane together. Vance joined a group of service members to help carry Kirk’s casket as it was loaded onto the aircraft. Turning Point USA, Kirk’s conservative youth organization based in Phoenix, expressed their grief, stating, “We’ve lost a leader, mentor, and friend. Our thoughts and prayers are with Erika and their two children during this unimaginable time.”
Kirk was known for being a polarizing figure, paving the way for young individuals, especially men, into the ‘Make America Great Again’ (MAGA) movement.
Trump has announced plans to posthumously honor Kirk with the Medal of Freedom and reached out to his widow on Thursday. He expressed confidence that the authorities are making significant progress in locating the shooter, mentioning he has some information about potential motives but prefers to wait before sharing it.
Just hours after Kirk was pronounced dead following an emergency hospital visit, Trump released a video statement from the Oval Office, assuring the public that his administration will find everyone connected to this heinous act of violence, including the groups that support it.
Following an earlier combative statement where he placed blame on “the radical left” for the tragedy, Trump later toned down his rhetoric when responding to media, suggesting his supporters refrain from answering violence with violence.
This exchange was promptly shared on the White House’s social media, likely an attempt to quell rising tensions that had already manifested in violence, evident from an incident in Boise, Idaho, where Kirk’s critic was assaulted during a vigil.
Don Bacon, a retiring Republican congressman from Nebraska, expressed his hope that Trump could bring the nation together post-shooting, critiquing the president’s populist tendencies toward anger. He reminded listeners of political violence that has impacted Democrats too, referring to a recent tragic incident in Minnesota.
