A sergeant at the scene tells KHOU 11 News officers responded to the Cambridge Place Apartments in the 10900 block of Meadowglen where there were reports of gunfire at about 12:15 a.m. Thursday.When officers arrived, they found three people shot. Police believe a car pulled into the complex shortly before the shooting and two men got out.

Afghani and Pakistani officials said 267 of those deaths occurred in Pakistan , while 115 have been confirmed dead in Afghanistan . The temblor was centered deep beneath the Hindu Kush mountains in a sparsely populated region of northeastern Afghanistan that borders Pakistan , Tajikistan and China.

The confirmed deaths include 22 in North Carolina, 12 in Florida, four in South Carolina, three in Georgia and two in Virginia. Matthew's heavy rain pounded the Commonwealth overnight Sunday, resulting in flash floods that left roads impassable and some residents in need of rescue.

In Pakistan, where 25 people were reported killed, much of the damage struck southwestern Baluchistan province. Imran Zarkon, chief of provincial disaster management, said 14 died there in the past 24 hours, mainly when roofs collapsed amid heavy snowfall.

Heavy snowfall had forced closures of many highways and some parts in the province were under six inches of snow. Eleven people were killed in eastern Punjab province when their roofs caved in under strong rains, said Abdul Sattar, an official with the state-run emergency service.

In Afghanistan, at least 18 people, including women and children, died on account of the severe weather, according to provincial officials. Hasibullah Shaikhani, a press officer with the state ministry for disaster management, said most of the highways in Afghanistan were closed due to heavy snowfall and fears of avalanches.

Of the Afghan casualties, eight people were killed in southern Kandahar province, said Bahir Ahamdi, spokesman for the provincial governor. In western Herat province, seven people died, including five members of the same family, said Abdul Ahad Walizada, spokesman for the provincial police chief. Three people were killed in southern Helmand province, said Omar Zwak, spokesman for the provincial governor.

Residents of the Afghan capital, Kabul, where temperatures dropped to -15 degrees Celsius (5 degrees Fahrenheit), abandoned driving and struggled to get to work on snow-covered roads.

Taliban propose brief Afghan ceasefire: insurgent sources .
The Taliban have offered a brief ceasefire to the US, two insurgent sources said Thursday, a move which could allow the resumption of talks seeking a deal for Washington to withdraw troops from Afghanistan. Washington has for weeks been calling on the militants to reduce violence, posing it as a condition for resuming formal negotiations on an agreement that would see US troops begin to leave the country in return for security guarantees from the insurgents.
