This past Saturday night, the spotlight turned to Pam Bondi as ‘Saturday Night Live’ aired a sketch that picked up where her heated Senate hearing with the Democrats left off. Amy Poehler expertly stepped into the role of the attorney general during this much-anticipated return.
During the skit, Poehler’s Bondi was quick to throw some jabs when faced with a tough question about President Donald Trump’s decision to send National Guard troops against Americans. Her answer? Classic Bondi style: “Before I don’t answer, I’d like to insult you personally!”
The laughter didn’t stop there. Tina Fey made a surprise cameo as Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, showcasing an assault-style rifle and delivering a comedic pitch for Employment with ICE. Her over-the-top questions, such as “Do you need a job now?” and “Have you ever bought supplements from a gas station?” left the audience in stitches.
In Fey’s words, “Buckle up and slap on some Oakleys, big boy: Welcome to ICE!”
Poehler, well-known for her seven-year run on SNL before her stardom in ‘Parks and Recreation’, hosted the show for the third time, perfectly blending nostalgia with humor on the occasion of SNL’s 50th anniversary—an impressive milestone since its debut back on October 11, 1975.
While opening her monologue, Poehler reflected on her journey, recalling her days as a fan watching the show in Burlington, Massachusetts. “I used to think, ‘I want to be an actress one day…at least until they create an AI actress who’s funnier than me and ready to go all out,'” she cheekily remarked.
Amid the laughter and fun, Poehler reminded viewers of the power of friendship, saying, “If you have a place that feels like home, where you can laugh with friends, then you’re lucky—and I certainly feel that this way.”
And of course, she didn’t miss the chance to poke fun at her imaginary AI rival. “To that little AI watching at home right now dreaming of being on this stage someday, I’ve got news for you: Beep, boop, beep, boop—translation: You’ll never write a good joke, silly robot! And just so you know, I’m totally game for being more daring, but nobody’s asked me yet!”
Another highlight of the show was a hilarious skit with guest star Aubrey Plaza, who played a new character in a cheeky parody of Netflix’s “The Hunting Wives”. It centered around an outrageous scenario in which Plaza shared she has a girlfriend—leading the other characters to recoil and shout, “Lesbian!” before brandishing their weapons!
The fun continued with an animated trio of former SNL anchors—Seth Meyers, Fey, and Poehler—taking part in a light-hearted quiz competition alongside the current hosts, Colin Jost and Michael Che.
Wrapping up the night was musical guest Role Model, who performed “Sally, When The Wine Runs Out” and was joined on stage by Charli XCX. A beautiful moment of tribute followed as the show honored the late Oscar-winning actress Diane Keaton, who sadly passed away at the age of 79 earlier that day.
Looking ahead, Sabrina Carpenter will take the helm next week as both host and musical guest in an upcoming episode that promises more entertaining moments. Catch ‘SNL’ live on NBC—part of the NBCUniversal family which also includes NBC News.
