In a recent Associated Press interview in Seoul, Daniel Dae Kim addressed the unsettling “chilling effect” that’s been affecting free speech and DEI initiatives in Hollywood.
When asked if he is concerned about the backlash against DEI efforts in entertainment, Kim, the talented actor known for his role in Butterfly, stated, “We’re already seeing it.” He elaborated, referencing the controversy surrounding the $16 million settlement involving Paramount and CBS News related to a 60 Minutes interview with Kamala Harris, which faced allegations of being manipulated by Donald Trump, leading to a massive $20 billion lawsuit that the media company labeled as groundless.
Kim emphasized, “‘DEI’ has become a dirty word lately, but for me, DEI is not just a trend; inclusion is an essential part of my life. I’ve experienced it throughout my entire career in this industry.”
Following the settlement news, Stephen Colbert, host of a late-night show aired on CBS (owned by Paramount), referred to it as a “big fat bribe” amid the ongoing merger with Skydance. Shortly thereafter, Colbert announced the cancellation of his show next year, raising eyebrows and concerns among fans, lawmakers, and fellow entertainers. In response to the controversy, Paramount framed their actions as simply financially motivated.
During his conversation with the AP, Kim also expressed understanding for actors who accept typical roles to break into the industry. He said, “For many starting, it’s almost necessary to take those stereotypes. Once you’re established with financial security, you have the luxury of making different choices. Those without any minority or racial representation don’t have to navigate these conversations. But whatever role I take will always be viewed through the perspectives and biases of many viewers.”
