Ex-Mayor Appeals to PM to Halt Asylum Seeker Hotel Plan

A councillor from Surrey is calling for the Prime Minister to step in and put an end to the scheme that would house only single men at the Stanwell Hotel. Med Buck took action by sending a letter to No 10 representing the interests of the local residents.

In his correspondence, Buck urged Sir Keir Starmer to truly hear the concerns of the Stanwell community and find a better housing solution that benefits everyone — both those in need and the safety of the residents.

Just recently, the Home Office put a pause on the plan to allocate the hotel exclusively to male asylum seekers.

Mr. Buck has pointed out the significant fears locals have regarding safety, community unity, and overall well-being, asserting that these matters require immediate and thoughtful attention.

He stated, “This letter serves as our official call for urgent intervention to prevent the accommodation of male-only asylum seekers at Stanwell Hotel.” His appeal comes as a former mayor of Spelthorne who often emphasizes the community’s positive history of welcoming asylum seekers, including families who are currently residing at the hotel. However, he believes this new strategy could escalate tensions.

He remarked, “Our residents have played a crucial role in helping asylum-seeking families feel at home, supporting their children’s education, and integrating them into the community.” Buck emphasized that concentrating solely on young single males, without balancing the presence of families and diversity, threatens this established harmony and could overload local services.

On August 7, Spelthorne Borough Council voted in favor of a motion urging the Home Office to reconsider their approach.

As of Wednesday, the local council has confirmed they are collaborating closely with the Home Office about how the Stanwell Hotel will be utilized in the future, but ultimately, the decision rests with the government.

Council leader Joanne Sexton acknowledged the “serious concerns voiced by residents.” She added, “It is important for us to remember that the previous government engaged in a contract with the hotel owners. The adopted motion delivers a clear message: we oppose the proposed change regarding the hotel, and any decisions made should carefully consider their effect on the community.”
