(Bloomberg) — Mark Welsh, who has been leading Texas A&M University as president, is officially stepping down, marking the end of his term as the institution’s leader after just two years. This news comes in the wake of increasing scrutiny and pressure from political figures.

As per a statement from Chancellor Glenn Hegar along with the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents, his resignation will take effect at 5 p.m. this Thursday.

The board has indicated plans to appoint an interim president shortly and will begin a national search for a permanent replacement.

Welsh found himself at the center of controversy recently when a video circulated online, depicting a student accusing a professor of presenting “gender ideology” in classroom discussions. The video gained traction on X thanks to Republican state lawmaker Brian Harrison, which sparked broader discussions and even caught the attention of the US Justice Department.

In response to the backlash, Welsh initially took action by relieving a dean and a department head from their positions, citing that the course material deviated from what was officially approved. Subsequently, after pressure from Texas Governor Greg Abbott, the professor in question was fired.

Expressing gratitude towards Welsh, Chancellor Hegar stated, “President Welsh is a man of honor who has led Texas A&M with selflessness and commitment. We appreciate his dedication and contributions. Yet, we agree that it’s time for a change to set Texas A&M up for future success.”

Welsh is not the first university president to resign amid such turbulence, especially as Republican lawmakers push back against educational institutions regarding teaching methods, handling of discipline, and recruitment practices.
