After Eileen Higgins claimed victory over Republican Emilio Gonz lez in the recent Miami mayoral runoff, reactions were swift, notably by President Donald Trump. This election marks a historic moment for the city as Higgins becomes the first Democrat to take the mayoral seat in nearly three decades.

When queried about Democrats’ recent wins in Miami and Georgia, Trump reflected on his past experiences, saying, “I don’t let it worry me. History shows that winning the presidency often leads to losses in the midterms, even when the presidency is performed well.”

In another critical win, Democratic candidate Eric Gisler secured a special election victory in Georgia, defeating Republican Mack “Dutch” Guest IV for a former GOP-held position.

Significance of the Election

The Miami runoff signifies a pivotal twist in local and national politics. As Florida’s second-largest city and a longstanding Republican fortress, the fact that a Democrat now leads speaks volumes. Post-election analysis labels this contest a crucial litmus test for the upcoming 2026 midterms.

Democrats showed impressive performance in the 2025 elections, posing potential alarms for Trump and the GOP as they prepare for the midterms. Given that Florida remains Trump’s home turf, these results could hint at shifts in voter sentiment ahead of 2026.

Higgins’ Path to Victory

In early November, Higgins, a former Miami–Dade County Commissioner, gathered 36% in the first round while Gonz lez, a former city manager, only managed 19%. Neither reached the necessary threshold to win outright, forcing the matchup into a runoff. Ultimately, Higgins adeptly won with 59.46% compared to Gonz lez’s 40.54%, according to Florida election officials.

Despite Trump’s endorsement of Gonz lez, pre-election sentiment reflected in polls favored Higgins, predicting a resounding victory for her at 94%, while Gonz lez lagged behind at 6% on betting markets.

Insights from a poll by MDW Communications indicated strong support for Higgins among likely Miami voters, boasting a lead of nearly two-to-one over Gonz lez. An opposing poll conducted for Gonz lez’s campaign suggested a tighter competition.

The main talking points this election revolved around affordable housing, immigration policies, and the legal controversy surrounding the proposed site for Trump’s presidential library in downtown Miami. Both candidates built their campaigns around themes of anti-corruption, keenly aware of Miami’s ongoing political controversies, albeit highlighting distinct priorities.

Higgins emphasized affordable housing, bolstering public transportation, and enhancing environmental resilience. In contrast, Gonz lez promised tax cuts, improved community policing, and a streamlined permits process.

Voices from the Campaign

Ken Martin, Chair of the Democratic National Committee remarked: “While her opponent aimed to champion Trump’s agenda, Higgins kept her focus on reducing costs for Miami’s families. The results send another stark message to Republicans that people are growing weary of their costly policies affecting families nationwide.”

Higgins also expressed a collective sentiment ahead of the election, stating: “This campaign began with a focus on earnest leadership, accountability, and tangible results in our communities: fostering safer neighborhoods and enhancing housing affordability.”

Gonz lez spoke to his supporters via social media: “Miami homeowners, I stand with you. Secure homeownership enables families to thrive, neighborhoods to stabilize, and strengthen cities. My policies are designed to support you in achieving ownership after our victory.”

And Trump, sharing his enthusiasm for Gonz lez’s bid, posted on Truth Social: “I am proud to endorse Emilio T. Gonzales as Miami’s future mayor—he will focus on economic growth and protect our borders.”

Looking Ahead

Higgins will officially assume office as Miami’s mayor in early January.
