According to former lawyers from the U.S. State Department, many employees are now reluctant to offer advice that political appointees might find unfavorable. This climate of cautiousness has emerged during President Donald Trump’s administration, as reported by HuffPost. Officials are increasingly guarding their words, fearing potential repercussions.
On Saturday, HuffPost published findings indicating that a pervasive atmosphere of fear has taken hold, especially within the State Department’s legal office. Staff are gravely concerned about facing punishment when performing their core responsibilities amidst Trump’s distinct approach to foreign policies.
The report outlined that attorneys at the Office of the Legal Adviser—referred to as “L”—are apprehensive about suggesting that the administration’s initiatives may violate domestic or international law.
Particularly alarming are Trump’s significant military actions abroad, such as airstrikes targeting alleged drug traffickers in waters off South America. Former employees of the State Department are especially troubled by these steps.
Charlie Trumbull, a previous member of “L”, expressed outright disbelief over how any of the department’s legal staff could classify those strikes as appropriate conduct. He mentioned to HuffPost, “This indicates that our standard procedures for reviewing actions are not operating as they should.”
Trumbull emphasized the rising reluctance to deliver any advice that might not sit well with those in political positions.
Additionally, one former lawyer reflected on the department’s culture, saying, “Traditionally, we’ve prided ourselves on being candid, truthful, and challenging prevailing ideas to ensure they are well-supported.” However, the current structure has invoked fear about providing advice that may be unwelcome, leading employees to worry about being sidelined from discussions related to their areas of expertise.
It was indicated that the legal office has faced an alarming and significant reduction in personnel since Trump was inaugurated for his second term.
