Step Towards Peace: South Korea Begins Dismantling Anti-North Korean Speakers

Estimated read time 1 min read

In a significant step aimed at reducing cross-border tension, South Korea has commenced the removal of loudspeakers that have been broadcasting anti-North Korean content along the border. This action was confirmed on Monday by Seoul’s defense ministry.

Shortly after taking office in June, President Lee Jae Myung’s government opted to halt propaganda broadcasts that criticized the North in an attempt to reignite stalled communication with its northern neighbor.

However, North Korea has recently dismissed these gestures, showing little interest in engaging in talks with South Korea.

Considering that the two Koreas are technically still at war since the armistice of the 1950-53 Korean War, relations have notably worsened over recent years.

The removal of these loudspeakers is described by the defense ministry as a “practical measure to help ease tensions between the South and the North,” reflecting a conscious effort towards improving relations.
