On Friday, President Trump stirred the pot with a declaration about declassifying government files about Amelia Earhart, the legendary aviator. This move quickly led to backlash from commentators and Democratic politicians across social media, pointing out that nothing similar has been done regarding the Jeffrey Epstein case.
Newsweek reached out to the White House for comments on Saturday, but since it was outside regular office hours, there was no immediate response.
Why This Is Important
The President indicated he would release all related documents on Epstein, a convicted sex offender, leading up to the 2024 presidential election. Yet, he soon backtracked, dismissing the case as the “Democrat Epstein Hoax”—a remark that upset a number of his supporters.
Despite this, pressure will likely continue in and around Trump’s administration to open up all files concerning Epstein. The Department of Justice has repeatedly stated that there is no existing “client list” connected to Epstein’s actions, as many have speculated.
Key Details
On his Truth Social page, Trump announced he was ordering my Administration to declassify and release all Government Records related to Amelia Earhart, her final journey, and everything else about her. He underlined that he had received numerous requests to take this action, highlighting Earhart’s famous disappearance in 1937 while attempting to complete a global flight.
However, many on the platform X promptly asked why his focus was on Earhart files rather than Epstein’s.
California Governor Gavin Newsom, a frequent antagonist of Trump, shared the president’s post, quipping with a screenshot: AMERICA: Release the Epstein Files! TRUMP: Did you say Amelia Earhart?
Additionally, Ron Filipkowski, editor of the pro-democracy media platform Meidas Touch, commented: The whole country wanted Jeffrey Epstein files, and Trump gives us Amelia Earhart.
Entrepreneur Ed Krassenstein also weighed in, questioning on X, Why doesn’t he make a post like this calling for the release of all the Epstein files?
Amelia Earhart made history as the first woman to fly solo over the Atlantic Ocean in 1932 and gained international recognition, along with numerous aviation records. During her career, she advocated for women in aviation and helped establish The Ninety-Nines, a group for female pilots.
Her promising aviation journey tragically ended when she vanished while attempting to circumnavigate the globe in 1937, leaving behind a mystery that still intrigues many.
Public Reaction
In his Truth Social post, Trump expressed, I have been asked by many people about the life and times of Amelia Earhart—an intriguing story. Would I think about declassifying everything related to her, especially her last, fatal flight? She was a true Aviation Pioneer and made historic flights, including being the first woman to cross the Atlantic solo.
He further elaborated on her disappearance: Amelia almost flew three-quarters around the world before she suddenly vanished without a trace. This mystery, spanning nearly 90 years, has fascinated millions. I am commanding my Administration to declassify and release all Government Records linked to Amelia Earhart, her ultimate trip, and everything about her. Thank you for your interest in this issue!
