Unique Purple Sea Snails Found on San Diego Beach

Recently, visitors at a well-loved San Diego beach came across some fascinating shimmering purple shells dotting the sand.

Experts from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego have examined these shells and identified them as Janthina, a rare sea snail celebrated for its striking violet color and bubble-like flotation system.

These snails are typically found in warmer tropical waters but can occasionally drift to the shores of Southern California due to warm ocean currents. Learn more about this discovery here>>>
