Could Synthetic Life Spelling Doom for Humanity?

Imagine a kind of technology that hasn’t even been invented yet, yet scientists believe it could create chaos on a global scale. That’s the situation they’re warning us about with this concept called “mirror life” — synthetic creatures that could turn the rules of biology upside down.

John Glass, a genetic engineer known for creating the first living cell with a synthetic genome, states, in a thought-provoking article for the Financial Times: “We must choose to halt the development of mirror life now before it’s too late. The bigger question is whether we’ll act before it’s beyond repair.”

So, what’s the deal with these lifeforms? They pack DNA arrangements that are basically flip-flopped versions of organisms we currently know. Think of Earth’s DNA: it spins in a right-handed twist. In contrast, mirror life would have left-handed DNA, while the proteins, building blocks of cells, would twist the opposite way.

This weird mismatch raises a lot of concerns. If we start playing with these synthetic organisms, nobody really knows how they’d react or interact with our existing lifeforms, including humans. A paper backed by top experts, including two Nobel Prize winners, points out that the fallout could be severe, leaving the potential to wipe out all forms of life on Earth due to diseases these new organisms could unleash.

In fact, in June, more than 150 specialists gathered in Paris at a conference hosted by the Institut Pasteur to mull over these risks. Glass shared his astonishment that the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, a significant supporter of scientific study, declared it wouldn’t fund any mirror organism projects.

Most experts agree that this tech is still about ten years away, maybe three. But the urgency to block its development is genuinely intense.

“Once we crack the code for creating a mirror cell, producing more complex mirror bacteria will follow easily,” Glass noted. “If it happens, we’re opening Pandora’s box, and the dangers could be massive.”

Our bodies might struggle against these mirror-like molecules. Glass mentions that even a small immune issue can severely diminish our defense against infections, so a mirror bacterial attack could wreak havoc like having multiple immune deficiencies at once.

Additionally, these mirror bacteria might escape natural predators that usually keep regular organisms’ populations in check, potentially unleashing havoc in ecosystems.

Glass warns, “Areas affected might become permanently uninhabitable, endangering our agriculture and wildlife. We could witness up to a complete extinction event for numerous species.”

But why explore this risky field at all? Some argue the medical possibilities might be worth the peril, with new mirror proteins paving the way for drugs that are more effective and stay longer in the human body. Cautious regulations are crucial, Glass deduces, advocating for a balanced approach that prevents mirror life creation without stifling synthetic biology’s advancement.

As Glass puts it, just recognizing these risks now could mean we have a chance to avoid the point of no return down the line.
